Lionel Messi's pass for that second goal was beautiful.

I'll rescue the thread.

Messi's shot for the first wasn't bad either.

Or that shot for the third! Good timing.

Fair play to Jim Beglin saying that he would take Messi over Rooney. I think Rooney has been brilliant but surely anyone who isn't mental would take Messi.

Bryan Robson would probably drop him for not tackling back

That said, I do think he's shown too much respect. For the first goal, there was a defender alongside him within tackling distance. Maybe he didn't want to chance a foul and a free kick on the edge of the area, but the fact is that he was easily within tackling range, and with Messi in that position on the pitch, a shot was always on the cards, and shots from Messi tend to be goals.

Stick Nobby Stiles (as was, of course, not now ...) on him and we'd soon see who was boss. It wouldn't be pretty, but if you were a fan of the opposition, you'd want to see Messi subdued in any way possible.

If you're a neutral, he's a joy.

No need to worry for the World Cup, though. Opposing managers may be absolutely clueless about how to neutralise his threat, but Diego Maradona's found the perfect way to do it.

I'll be attempting to repeat that joke in the World Cup preview issue of WSC, so be forewarned.

Depends on context.

For the English Premier League I would take Rooney every time.

It wasn't for the EPL. As a Wales supporter who has just lost Aaron Ramsey for 6 months without any guarantee of him regaining his previous form, I wouldn't want Messi anywhere near that knackers yard of musclehead cloggers.

Stick Nobby Stiles (as was, of course, not now ...) on him and we'd soon see who was boss. It would still be Messi. Stiles would commit himself and Messi would skip past him. He did it past two defenders right up his arse last night.

"..without any guarantee of him regaining his previous form."

That's an unusual statement, as if those kind of guarantees can be made.
