All good points, but it was Michael Brown. A player deserving of something back if ever there was one.

It's hard to judge someone for hitting michael brown. He's the footballing version of a guy in a pub who reacts to people not paying him attention by punching women. (This is a metaphor, I'm not saying he's a woman beater, just a wanker) You wouldn't mind so much God he's an arsehole. Then again, so is Stevie G.

what did stevie G do?

Elbowed him in the back of the head, after Brown missed him with a blatant foul attempt.

As hobbes said, no one is attempting to clear Gerrard of complete arseholery, but I can quite see why he did it.

And at least it was the back of his head instead of the face which was what Dindane managed to get away with.
Wonder if there's a youtube of that?

It's worth repeating that it was Michael Brown, too. Who as he was running, looked over his shoulder, saw Gerrard coming and veered across deliberately to try to foul him off the ball. His timing was off, was all. Doesn't excuse Gerrard, of course.

Is this the first recorded use of The Bush Doctrine in defence of a footballer?

Edit: actually, Gerrard already cited it in court so I suppose not.

Apparently Attwell saw it and, to further gild his burgeoning reputation, took no action, so the FAs hands are tied.

Sooner that FIFA and the FA change the rules on allowing retrospective punishments the better.

I am hardly one to defend serious foul play but looking at that incident I might have given both of them a yellow card but nothing more.

Brown's in some ways is worse, a forearm that from the distant camera angle looks like it's near the throat. I'm not quite sure why Brown goes down from Gerrard's contact, it's more glancing than full force.

You get a better view from the side-on angle. From that, you can see Brown's arm gets no higher than Gerrard's chest and barely touches him.

As for why Brown goes down, well, I imagine that if a professional athlete sprinted towards you and smashed you on the back of your head, it would be quite difficult for you to retain your footing.

Well yes, though you make it sound as if he was standing waiting for a bus and was sledgehammered over by a charging Scouser. Both of them were running and tussling and I still think the blow was glancing to be honest.
