Was going to lump this on the bottom of the League Two thread, but I reckon it deserves a thread of its own. After several years of near misses, the basement's longest-serving club - a team who've been in the fourth tier ever since I started watching football - look like they're finally going to go up.

But I've read very little anywhere about their exploits, so was wondering what the fourth division watchers here made of their current crop, how they've finally managed to assemble a promotion-winning team, and other stuff. Also, from what I understand, their finances aren't exactly in great shape still are they?

So anyway post your Rochdale ruminations here.

I once managed them in CM0102 just to get them out of the 4th Division. That's how sorry I felt for them.

On Saturday, it occured to me that during Rochdale's long stay in the bottom division:

Wimbledon have been elected into the League;
- got promoted to the top division;
- won the Cup;
- been kicked out of the league;
- re-started at the bottom of non-league;
- and are in sight of a possible play-off promotion back into the League again.

For this reason alone I hope Rochdale get promotion - it must be bloody embarassing explaining what you've been done in the last 40 years.

If Rochdale win the division, then it will be the first honour they have won since joining the Football League in 1921. They were runners-up twice in D3 North in 1923/24 and 1926/27, and when the were promoted in 1968/69 they finished third.
And they were runners-up in the League cup in 1962.

They're good, but not the best I've seen in recent seasons.

Apparently when they played us on Saturday they had a more defensive set-up.

Lucky for us they fucking did, they totally outclassed us and 1-0 didn't do them justice.

They're big, strong, very well organised, confident on the ball and seem to be able to mix their style of play. In O'Grady and Dagnall they have two very strong and mobile strikers.

Basically all the ingredients for a Championship winning side.

What's remarkable is that their budget is nowhere near some of the other sides in the 4th division, including ours.

Whats more surprising is O'Grady played for us last season and he was fucking dreadful. A transformed player this time around.

O'Grady played exceptionally for Rochdale from the beginning of the season and yet Oldham - who have had chronic goalscoring problems - didn't recall him in January. Indeed they sold him to Rochdale for what was apparently an extremely small fee. A few days after the transfer was made permanent O'Grady scored his first hat-trick against Cheltenham just to rub Oldham's nose in it even more.

They should have gone up through the play offs in 2008, but lost the final to the team maintaining the largest squad in the division, on wages they couldn't really cover. So that wrong looks like being righted in the next few weeks.
