Mr Webb as usual is doing his best to prevent Spurs getting in the top four by refusing one of the most blatant penalties you will ever see as Salgado having been turned for the umpteenth time by Bale scythes him down.

We are still winning 2-0 with goals from Defoe and Pav.

Webb really hates Spurs doesn't he.

I think you're conflating bias with incompetency.

Thing is, for all the penalty decisions that one would regard as suspect (and that's an awful lot), those involving Webb and Spurs are so blatantly wrong that it would bring the feeling of paranoia out in any Spurs fan. Gomes/Carrick, Carvalho/Keane and now Bale/Salgado. All completely, unforgiveably wrong.

Indeed Roches.
If Web was so consistently incompetant, he would not be on the FIFA List.

He needs to tuck in his Arsenal shirt.

Pav misses a sitter, Blackburn fail to clear comically and a cross from bale and Pav puts it away.

3-1

Howard Webb has more interest in being seen to talk to players and apply what the spoofers call 'common sense' than in spotting fouls. He's a product of Keith Hackett's regime, and evidence as to why an English referee hasn't taken charge of a CL Final since 1994.

And as I type, he rules out a perfectly good Blackburn goal. You won't make it to the Quarter Finals in South Africa, Howard.

I hope you'll excuse me waxing recondite over here in the margin, but Gareth Bale talks like a Welsh version of Martin Brown from Radio Active.

Rotherham's finest was in Attercliffe last night. I wonder what he made of our penalty.

I haven't a clue whether HW is in line for WC action (the footbaling kind) this year, but if he is, I'll wager that he'll get a Semi or the Final itself. However incompetent he is, he looks like he knows what he's doing.

I'll wager you he doesn't go beyond the quarters. And I'd say the same about whoever was England's referee at the tournament. The main reason why English refs don't feature in the business end of major tournaments is that their approach to the game and interpretation of things differs between their domestic league and international games. So you end up with English referees not performing well enough and not being considered for the semis and final.

Amazingly, Howie was being bigged up on a Spanish sports show last night. They picked out some of his "work" from the ManU-Liverpool game (mandhandling Fletcher out of a ruckus, having a little chat and a smile with the players, nice calm body language etc) and saying this is just the kind of ref they need in Spain.

Spanish refs are truly shit but I don't think England's finest would offer much of an improvement.

Does anyone know if it's true, that while commentating on Liverpool's game at Man Utd last week, John Aldridge said of Webb:

"What do you expect from that referee. He used to work for South Yorkshire police...."

This was after Webb awarded the controversial penalty against Mascherano.

He looks like a good ref

Well, that's it in a nutshell isn't it? Howard Webb looks exactly like what you'd describe an imaginary good ref as looking like (as compared to say, Mike Riley). Webb looks authoritative, quite a big bloke, all that.

Except he's actually the type of referee that goes into games thinking 'I'm going to make a really big decision here'.

And you can normally count on it being the wrong one.
