I still think of Fortuna Dusseldorf as the Bundesliga regulars who gave the world the Allofs brothers and narrowly lost out to Barcelona in the 1979 European Cup-Winners' Cup final, so I was surprised to learn that they've spent most of the last decade sliding further and further down the German pyramid. However, they've apparently now hauled themselves back to the second tier, so perhaps the glory days are in sight again for this once-proud Westphalian club.

In Dusseldorf before the Wall fell...
I tried to resurrect their fortunes on Champ Manager a couple of times, but their chairman was a dick and kept sacking me.

I went to Alemannia Aachen v Fortuna a couple of weeks ago, they had about 3,000 fans, not bad for a Monday night (altough it's a kind of derby). They fully deserved their 1-0 win and are 4th of 5th. Ex Boro Slovakian forward Nemeth was playing for them

On a pedantic note of geography, Düsseldorf is in the Rhineland, not Westphalia. Basically a suburb of Köln (as only somebody with a Köln bias would say).

One of my fondest memories of German football was watching them.
Gladbach borrowed their stadium (built for the '74 WM) for a number of big games (inc the European Cup semi-final 1st leg v Liverpool when Ray Clemence ducked under Bonhof's free kick) when the Bokelberg was being rebuilt in the late 70s, but in order to retain home advantage (it being the next town/a suburb), they played Fortuna at SV Rheydt's ground, holding about 18,000.
We only just managed to squeeze in and ended up standing on the roof of a kiosk. Dusseldorf led 2-0 at half time but a tubby Jupp Heynckes, in the swansong of his career, came off the bench and scored twice (I think, may even have been a hat-trick) to secure a great 3-2 comeback win.
The crush/atmosphere in the small ground was a bit of a forestaste of what it'd be like the year after when I started watching Scottish football.

Fortuna D were a regular side featured on Soccer Made In Germany.
Hail Toby Charles.
Zimmerman's penalties and free kicks were Bonhof-like scary.
Knew they'd hit hard times awhile back. Not too far away, Bayer Uerdingen has seriously dropped since their mid-80s success.

What is now KFC Uerdingen fell off a cliff after Bayer pulled their sponsorship (and no, they haven't been replaced by Colonel Sanders, the acronym is for Krefelder Fussball Club).
They are currently in sixth tier of the German pyramid (following a couple of administrative relegations/denial of licenses), and recently signed world traveller (and former Bundesliga Golden Boot) Ailton, who looked as if he had spent the last five years eating his way around the world.

pre - internet days I remember looking in a German atlas for "Uerdingen" and finding this tiny neighborhood looking town. Took a bit more investigating to figure out the Krefeld connection.
