sixmarletsandaseagull: Townsend seemed to be speaking of Italian football in general. I imagine he is as clueless about the actual state of the Italian game as most of the rest of the pundits on British TV. It seems all of calcio is tarnished with the same brush according to this lot, because of the scandalous behaviour of a select few at the top.

Yeah, Italy has already given up on the following year.

Their best hope is for Inter to get Spartak, Bayern to get Barca or Man Utd, and HSV and Wolfsburg to get each other.

Does the fact that Andy Townsend has been heard spouting nonsense about the game mean an ITV channel has shown highlights?

I am going to go my whole life missing out on seeing any of this game through ignorance of the schedules, aren't I?

I don't think I've ever been so excited about football, so pleased. It was just an unimaginable night, a game for the ages. Yes, this is Fulham's greatest ever result. Fulham 4-1 Juventus. Jesus fucking Christ.

Although in this scenario it does mean that, one can expect to hear Andy Townsend spouting nonsense about any subject at any given time.

Were you there KotR? The Guardian minute by minute report said that he was very envious not being a Fulham supporter at Craven Cottage tonight.

The Cannavaro sending off was crucial I think. Not because him staying on the pitch would have stopped Fulham scoring 4, but until the red card Juve looked like they would probably score another, decisive, away goal.

Yeah, I was there. I went to Turin as well. I have no sympathy for Juve (although their fans clapped Fulham off) because their third goal in the first leg was dodgy as fuck, time-wise. This is a victory that will live with me forever. I don't know what you can say about the job Roy Hodgson has done. He's remarkable.

Thi sort of joy is hard to describe.

Yeah, I was thinking that when watching the fans go mental that this is what all the teams who fielded second string sides in the UEFA Cup (Bolton, Villa, Spurs) had missed out on and wondering whether they felt any regret. I sincerely fucking hope so. I was elated, and I'm not even a Fulham fan.

Quite right. Villa could've been a contender for this cup, if O'Neill wasn't such a insular halfwit. European football is brillant. A night in Basel shits on a night in Burnley.

Still, fuck Villa, eh? It's all about the only club in SW6 still in Europe tonight.

I think we of the 'lesser' clubs can certainly empathize with you, KontheR!

Congratulations!

Obviously I was disappointed by the result, but given I am also a Boro supporter (and indeed, a Boro boy), I can completey empathise with how Fulham fans must feel right now. The road to Eindhoven in 2005 was entirely unforgettable, and I wouldn't swap it for Boro continuing to toil around in the lower ranks of the Premier League.

I guess it's a complicated formula, but (with regards those UEFA Country Coefficients) what happened in 2005/06 that Romania's average score was better than everyone else's? Was it a case of Steaua and Rapid being their only teams and both doing well in the UEFA Cup?

Ah, I see how it works now. So Steaua and Rapid both had a bunch of wins and some bonus points, and having only one other team (Dinamo) didn't bring down their average too much.

Yeah, Steaua beat Rapid in the quarter finals, before going out in the semis. As the number of points won is divided by participating teams it's possible to make a big movement upward with only a couple of teams if they do well.

Yeah, I stopped being so lazy and realised it was all laid out pretty clearly on that site. I see Ukraine did a similar number in 08/09.

Yeah, if you want to up your ranking, it's a lot easier to do it in the UEFA Cup. Which is why Sevilla are currently the 6th best ranked team in Europe (after Barcelona and the Prem big 4).
