Just seen the finalised fixture list for Northern Ireland's games in the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers, and they're due to play all bar one of their games on a Friday or Tuesday.

I can see it's reasoning - international sides have their players from Sunday night, so a Friday game hardly cuts in to precious preparation time. And in turn, it allows a Tuesday fixture to follow without foresaking the three days between games, which in turn allows them to keep the clubs sweet by returning players on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

So, is this set to become a feature of the international calendar or is this just the North being different?

Not having looked at anyone else's fixtures, I assumed this would be standard?

I'd prefer a Saturday/ Tuesday split myself.

PS it's now looking more like a couple of chartered aircraft to the Faroes, rather than the more romantio hired trawler option.

This being northern Ireland it's just as likely that the IFA has been seized by some bizarre cult like the seventh day adventists.

It could be to generate TV coverage. Maybe Sky or somebody similar have made a deal, but as they tend to show Rep of Ireland and the other home nations it may have ben changed to avoid clashing.

It was announced during the draw that all fixtures would be on Friday and Tuesday for the reasons in Roches PA second paragraph.

Maybe out of recognition of the bizarre 19th century orange creation myth that they were descended from the lost 13th tribe of israel, the northern irish and scottish FA have decided to observe the sabbath as well as keeping sunday free as well.

Sean- I think it's simply that the coaches (and probably the clubs and the players themselves) want four days rather than three to recover, although of course this increases the chance of Messrs Lafferty, Evans and co. going on an extended bender.

Almost all the weekend games in the group are on Fridays.

Edit- as Nil says above.

I remember reading that games would be played on a Friday night when the groups were drawn but convinced myself I'd misunderstood.

Wales and England meeting on Friday nights in Cardiff & London is a, er, challenging idea.

Ah, I missed the draw when it was made that Sunday morning, so I wasn't aware of it becoming policy. I also was unaware that Scotland's fixtures had been finalised along similar lines.

I sensed it would have to apply to all games in a group, as one could forsee the problems with two sides meeting on a Tuesday after one has played on the previous Friday whilst the other played on the Saturday.

Anyway, good luck to those trying to make it through Dublin's Friday evening traffic to get to Lansdowne Road.
