IM not too sure why African teams producing a breakthrough would be any more positive or satisfying, than say New zealand, Honduras,Paraguay,or North Korea coming through,or South Korea in 2002.Or Indeed England.......!!!
Is the author of the main article an African, or is he being just a little bit PC?
I think it was Pele way back in about 1970 who said something like "An African Country will win the WC before 2000"
Still no sign of that materialising, and indeed some of them like Nigeria and Cameroon have actually gone backwards in recent years.
A better question would be why this is.
After all most of their players play in the "big" leagues now, so can we really still call them "small" countries?
Questions, questions all to be answered in about 7 months time. - Dalef65

It would be more fun to have it as a genuine world "cup" competition - knock out stages from the off, everyone in the draw together (maybe seed it so bigger nations only come in during the third round?

That would give smaller nations opportunities to play teams from other continents for a change. - Jongudmund

Look at the way FIFA behave.
There's fairly limited evidence to encourage lots of long-standing members being able to get to a World Cup, let alone new ones! - Munchkin
