Hungary were never going to qualify for South Africa -- their high place in the group was a false position because they had used up their games against Malta and Albania. It all goes back to when they had the bollocks beaten off them by the USSR at Mexico 86 (2-0 down after 3 minutes), having gone into the tournament as mild dark horses due to winning the qualifying group ahead of the Netherlands.
