I am glad to see Peter resist the future discourse that continues to circulate around the USNT. It's the same discourse that circulates around the minnows in UEFA, and let's be honest, the future for those sides is not any closer to the present in WC 2010 qualifying than it was in Euro 2008 qualifying. The US is clearly the power in CONCACAF qualifying for the past few tournaments, but when the WC begins, we are often second best to Mexico and toward the bottom in general (last place in WC 98 and near last place in WC 2006).

Unlike Peter, I do not see the inconsistency as a good thing. The problem is that we have not had a world class striker and our creative midfielders are sub par. So we can hold other teams but we can't score big goals outside of CONCACAF qualifying. I, like many US fans, was energized by the last 3 games of the Confederations Cup, but I do not trust that our play against Egypt and Spain is the norm for games outside CONCACAF. The reality is that we had not scored a goal from open play until we played Egypt and our ability to score from open play in WC 2006 was what? One goal? Bradley does not seem to have any answers for our offensive woes but I don't know if there is an answer at this point. I don't see Adu as the great savior that people were expecting (or hoping for) but I do wonder if we would be better with him in the side. He has did very well in the U20 WC in Canada and looked good in the Olympics. - danielmak

Well said, but I think Mexico is the same way honestly. Well not at the World Cup, they're remarkably consistent there. But since 2006 they've definitely regressed. They'll be lucky to get out of group stages next year.

In 2007 they lost the US in the gold cup final and a week later they beat Brazil 2-0 in South America. They're just an inconsistent as the US. Headscratcher, honestly.

P.S.
Saprissa Stadium is the toughest venue in CONCACAF, tougher than Azteca. Costa Rica can beat anyone in the world there, anyone. The US being routed by Costa Rica was no surprised for anyone involved. - radmonkey

As a U.S. fan, this is perfectly said. I want more of course, but I'm enjoying (mostly) the ride. - flannelenigma
