All the furore surrounding the appointment of Alan Shearer does not, however, disguise the fact that the current crop of Newcastle United players seems to be less than ordinary. Having watched them many times this season, yes OK, you cannot fault their determination and commitment to the cause (lost though it now may be) but this is just not enough to even survive in the Premiership these days. Unfortunately, there is such a distinct lack of real quality in the side and now when it comes to the real crunch I wonder how many of them will be really up for the fight to avoid the drop. - salamander

I've been saying this for the last year, Ashley's a mackem! He only bought the club to see how much of a complete mess he could make of it... - CarsmileSteve

Look, everyone knows it's passion that fuels the Geordie game. Newcastle's jam-packed trophy cabinet speaks for itself. You don't need tactics or good players to win the league, you need pure, erm, black and white blood. Just get players who can go out there and run around believing in Newcastle and all it stands for, and results will come. Football's a religion up there, you know. Just because we sneering atheists don't have the faith, that doesn't mean Newcastle fans can't believe glory will come by appointing a callus-handed son of Geordie soil and toil (albeit one with the charisma of a croquet mallet). - imp

Do people actually get paid money for writing "Rallying calls will get Newcastle out of the relegation scrap. Such tactics may not work elsewhere but emotion has always been the fuel for the Geordie rocket"?
