I suppose the easiest point of reference could be the emergence and sustained popularity of Oasis, though Coldplay could also be used for a more recent alternative. Some say it was clearly the death of John Smith. Any thoughts?

For me it was when vast swathes of self-proclaimed music connoisseurs in the press starting raving about Kylie and S-Club. Seriously, what the fuck.

Give the likes of Tricky five minutes and they'll shit all over Kylie's jaded producer's best efforts.

I think it was Jive Bunny. I thought we were fucked through the S.A.W. years, but it was Jive Bunny that confirmed it.

Jive Bunny wasn't really all that different from the Stars On 45 right years earlier.

So, it's a straight-up, either/or choice between Tricky - who is so in awe of the majesty of Kylie's "Slow" that he felt moved to honour it with a respectful cover, rather than "shit all over" it, or whatever tough-guy pottymouthed punk rock phraseology you choose to employ - and Kylie herself, and we can't have both?

Cos, excellent as Tricky is, I'm gonna pick Kylie every day. And, egomaniac as he is, I suspect Tricky would too. But the happy truth is that we can, and will, have both. Cake eaten. Cake still had. Deal.

Oh, and that only a peat-brained cretin would consider Kylie and S Club to be the same thing.

Kylie is a celebrity, not a musician. She's a talent-free entity created through a symbiotic relationship with the tabloid media. Sure, she hired some big shot producer to write Slow, who churned out the song, put it through a Yamaha keyboard and had Kylie sing it with the help Pro Tools.

Tricky shows what happens when the same song ends up in the hands of somebody who is highly talented and has genuine passion for music.

The mass hysteria around Kylie in the music press is bewildering.

So? Elvis played guitar a bit, but he wasn't really a "musician". Sinatra wasn't a "musician". Who cares?

I don't agree that Kylie Minogue is talentless, but suppose she was: again, who cares? Those of us who love (say) Can't Get You Out Of My Head aren't hung up on what percentage of the sing's success ought to be credited to the singer. It's an extraordinary song.

Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra were both musicians - consummately and vitally so. Kylie is a musician too but not a particularly distinguished one - she's more of a zone in which great pop things can potentially happen. Grace Jones was a s
