"alright" just says "illiterate" to me.

Guess I'm illiterate then. So what should people use? "All right"? That just looks strange. Seems like it should mean something a bit better/stronger than just plain "alright" too...

No, "illiterate" was a deliberate overstatement so I could do the hilarious "brung up" gag. I realise the game wasn't really worth the candle...

I will say, though, that I'm surprised that "all right" looks all wrong to some. I don't understand that at all.

I should restate the "alright" thing so, Wyatt, it's closer to my claim about the other, that it means something a bit different.

"How did you do on your spelling test, Phil?"

"I got them all right. How did you do, Shane?"

"I did alright."

No, both should be "all right".

The fictitious names in those example are always ludicrous, aren't they?

But I'm with 'Shane'. I'm OK with alright.

My late dog, the greatest dog in the history of dogkind, was named Shane, so if I were to meet someone with that name, they might have to let me scratch them behind the ears for old times' sake.

Wasn't WE asking for clarification on the difference between anymore and any more, not on all right/alright.

One could see them being bullish on that.

I think the "all right" thing is a bit of a fiction, I think people are kidding themselves, meself. "All right" - how does that mean what people mean when they say "alright"?

I'm very glad I was right. For years (well, for quite a while), I've been saying that "thankyou" was wrong, only for people to say "no it USED to be wrong but it's become acceptable". At which I scream and start pulling hair.

The book was awful, by the way. It got good reviews, presumably because she's a Freud and people were too scared to slag it off in case they'd missed the point. Or maybe I missed the point, who knows. The only thing I know is that none of the reviews actually say what is good about this book, precisely.

I realise this is the wrong forum for this.

At a guess, that things are "all right with me" or "all right in my world". etc. I still prefer 'alright'.

Hypocritically I prefer "alright" too, although I know it's wrong.

Are you going to write the publisher to see if there's a reason? I'd be curious to hear what they say.

The vast majority of usage is in situations where things are most definitely not all right, though - isn't it?
