He's not really known for saying much in general, is he?

Bit harsh on the man. He was very good in the Michael Mann crime pic, Heat (he was very good in Heat? Pnaar).

He's also got a restaurant/artistic centre/other Tribeca gubbins to run, so I suppose he's got to keep the cash rolling in. Anyway, he's done well enough to afford to jump the shark a few times.

When we (in other words, the title of this thread) say(s) 'portrayal', doesn't it mean 'portrayal of a real-life character'? That's how I read it anyway.

If so, then Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious.

If not, then Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. (Or was that based on an autobiography? I can't remember now.)

Both received critical acclaim, but in neither case can I particularly understand why.

A lot of actors make a career out of having a certain on-screen charisma and only taking parts where they get to essentially play themselves. However De Niro showed some depth and range in Awakenings, as I remember it (haven't seen it in a long time).

Y'see, I totally agree with this. De Niro just always seemed to get by playing a smug, cocky arsehole. Yet in 'Awakenings' I thought he was great. Shame he was opposite the simpering, hamming Williams, as I feel he detracted from the overall quality of the film.

hmm.

I shall stand up for Robin Williams in this one. He is generally annoying as hell in most things, but this was (for him) played low-key, and I think he added to the film.

Having said that, I nominate him for Good Morning Vietnam, playing a pre-cursor to wacky DJ's everywhere.

I was trying to find our what that film was the other day. IMDB says it's based on a trure story, which I find unbelievable.

It's based on a book by Oliver Sacks, who is a consulting neurologist in New York who has written a number of books based on cases he has worked on.

The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat is another of Sacks' books.

Which you might find equally unbelievable. Interesting worthwhile read I thought.

Indeed, all of Sacks' work serves to reinforce an appreciation of just what an incredibly complex organ the brain is.

My mother worked a lot with consulting neurologists; a large number of the cases they see are fascinating, but no one has been as good at capturing those cases for a general audience as Sacks.

He was a prick in Mork and Mindy too.

ok. Re-direction:

Daniel Day-Lewis in... hmm, not sure here. How about Gangs of New York? Was he acclaimed for that? No? Good.

DDL has been good in one film: My Left Foot, and thats only because Brenda Fricker does the work.

I sat through There Will Be Blood recently and feel I rather missed the point. Did I need to read the book first?
