AFC Liverpool made their league debut today and won 5-0 against Darwen. Their results and a match report appear in the official site with their goals being shown on LFCtv.

Although I'd love to be proven wrong, I don't think that there's mileage in this club. A crowd of 426 seems to be a bit disappointing given that this was their league debut.

Terrible weather, apparently. That's a nice little ground they use, home of Prescot Cables.

AFC Liverpoooool and Liverpoooool are right in bed together. They love each other so much it hurts. Rafa Benitez is a season ticket holder, and Steven Gerard says dat deyr fookin boss, la'.

Which is fair enough. Not everyone can be disenfranchised. Some people are just broke. And others still just wish to make a bit of a name for themselves. But Pawlu has hit upon the great truth/shame. There just aint the fans there to make this work.

But that's what they said about us. "It'll be over by Christamas." If AFC Liverpoooool win a few games, and get some good exposure, their gates will increase.

I wonder how they feel about being continually mentioned on the Liverpool's site. To some of them it must be like being a teenager, listening to some ridiculous emo music (or whatever) and finding that your parents really like it.

No, they love it. It's the whole point of the club. They marvel at the likes of Erik Meijer and Vegard Heggem being club patrons. A lot of FC United fans think the club are a fucking joke, but that's largely because a) they're scouse, b) they don't get it, and c) they're scouse.

AFC Liverpool aren't a breakaway club. They're there to provide an affordable alternative to those priced out of modern football.

Nothing wrong with that. Better than a bunch of spoilt crybabies whining "If you don't listen to us we're taking our ball and playing over there."

Well, you were doing so well, Hobbes.

"Nothing wrong with that"

Quite right. And nor did I say there was. In fact, the chairman of AFC Liverpool responded in a very positive manner to the blog post I wrote about the AFC Liverpool situation, saying it was the best write up the new club had had.

"Better than a bunch of spoilt crybabies whining "If you don't listen to us we're taking our ball and playing over there."

And you had to go and ruin it. Firstly, that's not exactly what we did. And secondly, this is a much better idea than you're giving it credit for. But whatever.

Hobbes in wrongness of Hobbesian proportions.

Though you have to say with this AFC Liverpool lark, they've not burnt their boats here. Which is kind of the dividing line between the fan-run clubs that have succeeded and those that haven't.

I'm thinking of Cortes' actions in Mexico. The FCUM people were clear that their setting up was antagonistic to the direction of MUFC.

AFC Liverpool seems to be saying that premier League football is too expensive, but they hold no grudge to anyone at LFC for being so expensive.

If you're in this for the long haul, you need people who are passionate about making it work. For that to happen, you need to have a reason which burns brightly. This seems more matchstick than matchgirls.

Doesn't the potential success of AFCL rather depend on what their ambitions are?

426 fans is a huge attendance at the level they have started out at - if they maintain or slightly increase that, then they could easily sustain a club at Step 3 (Unibond Prem) level.

Given that they have done this primarily because they have been priced out of Anfield, surely this would be a sensible level of ambition? Any higher up the pyramid and they'd be looking at prices which really don't stack up against the entertainment on offer.

Quite.

And given that AFC Liverpool have, unlike FC United, shirt sponsorship revenue to fall back on, 426 is more than enough to support the team.
