Arrived in Glasgow this morning. Only had a cursory glance, first thing I noticed was the Inverness fan was obviously busy the day WSC asked him for his piece for the preview.
Very disappointing juxtaposition of the 'funny' cartoon of the Salvation Army medics stood around scratching their heads over a prostrate player, underneath, er, the Motherwell fanzine bloke's story about Phil O'Donnell dying on the pitch. Bad sub-editing, that.
That's exactly what I had logged on specifically to say, Rogin. Clearly just a blunder but it leapt off the page at me as being thunderingly inappropriate, particularly as the prostrate player in the cartoon was wearing a yellow shirt.
Yes, it's a bad error and I take a fair share of the blame having laid out the supplement. The explanation, though not excuse, is that the set of 14 panelled 'Football Icon' cartoons are separate to the running text and as such none are intended to directly illustrate the content on the same page. It was bad planning for the St John's cartoon to be placed on the SPL spread, clumsy at best that it should fall next to the Motherwell entry. No connection to the main body of text is implied but it could, and should, have been moved. I hope people will see that no offence was intended but apologies to Motherwell fans in particular who may, quite rightly, be unimpressed.
The article on Hoffenhem makes a bit of a blunder, saying that 'single individuals acquiring teams is a relatively alien concept' without mentioning the key point that the German FA prevent anyone - individually or corporately - from acquiring any club.
thouht Roger Titchfords article on Readings brief stay in the Premier was illuminating...he acknowledged the lack of competiveness at the top end but found the regular media spotlight hypnotising to the extent that previous prejudices about the credibility of grass roots football over top flight football became an issue of doubt..
showed just how insidous the influence of Premier League football..
