Weightlifting, that's what I've been enjoying. A procession of straining, grimacing golems hauling impossible loads into the air and standing, tottering underneath them as if the slightest flicker in their concentration would cause the lot to come crashing back to the mat. It's the only event so far that's had me screaming at the screen, "Come on!", each time one of them tries to force that dumbbell a little further from the surface of the planet.

The commentators for the Andy Murray game on the BBC were funny. As it became clear that he was going to lose, they began holding forth about how the Olympics "aren't exactly the pinnacle of the sport", then tried to blame the weather for his crap performance.

Sue Barker afterwards: "But the good news is that Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have all made it through to the next round." Yes, god forbid there were any more results that didn’t go exactly to the form book . . .

Blaming it all on a 14-year old on top of everything. Classy.

Yes, really charming.

Talking of great ambassadors for their country, La Lanterne Rouge, can you post the link for that nauseating photo of the Spanish basketball team? I'd like to show it to some people on a Spanish 'foro' I visit.

It's at the bottom of page 7.

It makes the footballers and their conga past Bastian Schweinsteiger's interview look like model sportsmen.

A guy from Togo has just won bronze in the Kayak Slalom, the country's first medal ever.

That Togolese swine has thieved a medal out of the clutches of Ireland's Eoin Rheinisch. Heartwarming underdog story my arse.

I caught a bit of the rowing on RTE before leaving the house this morning. Ger Canning was doing the commentary, and was obviously sitting in a studio in Dublin, because he had done the Cork v Kilkenny game at Croke Park on Sunday.

This wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't been banging on ceaselessly about the weather conditions ("It's 59% humidity here") and the proximity of the venue to Beijing ("It's 45km north of the capital"). Ger, we all know you're sitting in a darkened little prefab somewhere in Montrose, stop trying to give us local colour and just commentate on the fucking race.

I don't know much about Togo but I think of it being pretty flat, if wet. I can't picture it having lots of fast water for training on.
