That was a great race! I'm not so surprised about Sanchez - he was always going to be the one next behind Valverde in the pecking order, since Sastre and Contador are not world-class one-day riders, it was very hilly for Freire, and depending on how the tactics played out, Spain were pretty much always going to have one or other of them on the podium.
Sastre did a great job shredding the peloton, I thought, but what a performance by Cancellara! you kind of worry that he'll have blown himself out a little before the TT but then... it's not for what, four days? This is Cancellara, he'll thik of that as a training ride. I think he might even have improved that bronze had he not got boxed in, uphill sprint or not. Andy Schleck was raging at the end, though, and not entirely without reason - his teammate took a certain medal from him there, and you'd guess it would never have happened at Worlds...
Toro - not so minor. One American tourist killed and another injured before the Chinese attacker committed suicide - According to Sky. Don't know about the other attack.
I saw the ending of the opening ceremony and as was mentioned above, did worry for the safety of the chap who lit the flame!
The story here is that the American was a relative of the US voleyball coach (who is actually a Kiwi) and that it was a robbery gone wrong rather than anything "terrorist"-related. And now they are reporting that the alleged assailant has committed suicide while in custody.
There was a pro-democracy protest just after the Chinese competitor in the three-day-eventing dressage there. Whether they were protesting at the Chinese government, or the fact he goes to Eton, is unclear.
I still haven't finished watching the opening ceremony yet. And I won't get to watch the cycling for over an hour, then NBC will show something else for two hours, and then finish the coverage.
But I'll be damned if I'm getting up at 2am or whenever to watch it live.
I'm really geting fed up with Televisión Española's coverage - I haven't seen a single competitor who isn't Spanish yet. This, in Men's Gymnastics, is as unforgivable as it is tedious, as we sit for ages waiting for the marks to come up while watching the gymnast take off his tape, have a drink of Powerade, etc. Boo.
I should point out that Samuel Sánchez, the cycling gold medallist, is from Oviedo ("Capital del Deporte"), and I often see him shopping with his missus in a local supermarket. I've never seen him go near the beer section, mind you.
I'd like to thank the BBC for inflicting Matt Baker/Barker (whatever the fuck he's called) on us. Commentates on gymnastics like the childrens tv presenter he is. Fuck off and stick to Crufts.
I shall be making more ill informed geographical comments soon. Next up how life as a landlocked country has hindered Ireland and how the beaches of Luxemburg are the longest golden sands in the world.
Meanwhile, I've watched more Dressage than seemed humanly possible. I watched it through the night and then my wife was watching it when I woke up at noon, so about 5 hours today I reckon. No idea how it works still.
