Dammers' background, of course, is much the same as Tim Westwood's. Not that that takes anything away from the records - in fact it arguably makes them stronger and more powerful in context.
I saw The Specials supporting The Clash at what was The Music Machine in Camden.
Terry Hall had a jazz-funketeer wedge haircut and Bowie-style baggy trousers with loads of pleats.
They were fucking amazing. I'd never seen anything like it. It seemed like there were about 20 of them on stage, the way they were all diving about and dancing back and forth. And then they just disappeared.
Getting on for a year later, I think (I may be wrong), Gangsters came out and they'd gone all black and white checky. But they were still tremendous live.
QUOTE: The article is wrong about that being "their first gig together in 27 years", they did tour in 1997/98.
Not with Terry Hall, they didn't.
Some sort of 'Specials' has been touring pretty much non-stop. One version even had Jake Shillingford of My Life Story as lead singer.
By the way, I saw Rhoda Dakar last night. She said "This is a song you didn't hear at Bestival", and sang The Special AKA's "Racist Friend". Wonderful.
Yeah, the lead singer of The Bodysnatchers who duetted with Terry Hall on "I Can't Stand It". When the set finished, me and Mrs Rhino shouted "Goodnight, Rhoda!" Bit of a More Specials in-joke there. She laughed.
"Purple Cow,
I remember going to see The Beat at the Mercat Cross (Adjacent to the Market ,bottom of Bradford Street) before they released "Tears of a clown" and remember gazing at David Wakelins tear drop Guitar.
Long long time ago...."
Sorry just saw this. Yes The Beat had a regular weekly gig as the Mercat Cross, I saw them loads of times, 50p on the door if I remember correctly..
Ranking Roger was a bit of a mate, because he used to hang out with the Xpertz, who I was roadying for at the time. He was also big mates with my friends - the legendary Andy Wicket and Leroy Jones-Hemmings.
It's an irony that of all those bands that were around the West Mids at that time, Specials/Beat/Dexy's/Selecter etc the one band that everyone was convinced were going to be superstars - The Xpertz never made it. Though Motown offered Wicket a solo contract that Leroy turned down without consulting Andy.
Andy is an animator now, though he still gets some royalties from 'Girls on Film' and 'Rio', I believe. Leroy is a photographer in Cape Town.
SR - in your original bit about meeting Jerry Dammers, you said that he implied that a Specials reunion hadn't "necessarily been scrapped" and yet he wasn't at that one.

Any idea why not?
Well, I can only assume that his desire to do things properly wasn't matched by the others.
That's pretty much it, SR. Dammers was offered the Bestival gig with the others but thought it wasn't the way to come back. The fact that they went ahead and did it has quite possibly blown a hole in the entire idea.
