I was at T in the Park on Friday and saw a chap wearing one so, in the spirit of OTF forensic enquiry, asked him the relevance of the names.
The relevance for him was that they had all apparently scored "great goals" for Scotland. I asked if the lack of Old Firm association for the three players was significant and he said, "No, I'm Celtic, Big Man".
With that we wished each other well as he beckoned me in to the shaky high five that seems to be the festival's customary greeting and farewell out front.
BTW, the shirt actually reads ;
Thank god for
Law
Gemmill
McFadden
Keep up the good work.
In other related news , The Verve's event shirts were an attempt at a version of the Helvetica 'John, Paul, George & Ringo" ones but they did them in their own type face and with their surnames. They really are total gumbies.
For the record, I was trying to imply it was the manufacturer playing safe by avoiding OF links, rather than for example a Rangers fan refusing to wear something with Kenny Dalglish's name on it.
To me it seems a perfectly natural trio to pick, they might not be the best three players Scotland have ever had, but there are reasons for each of them being held in especial reverence. The lack of Old Firm affiliation thing hadn't occurred to me, but it probably helps too, yeah, they're entirely non-divisive figures.

Do you really? Law I can accept, he was before my time but he played at the highest level in club football and is the countries top goalscorer.
Gemmill, he had an excellent club career and did well internationally but was he even the best Scottish player of his generation? I'd argue that Dalglish, Souness even Jordan were better players and someone like Danny McGrain, albeit from an unfashionable playing position, was arguably a better player.
McFadden is certainly the most effective creative player we've got just now however he isn't anywhere near as good as the other 2.
It's about transcendent goals, not sustained brilliance.
The English version would have Geoff Hurst, and the Italian one would feature Marco Tardelli and Fabio Grosso. The French one might even have Manu Petit, FFS.
