In Glasgow airport this morning I saw a kid wearing a dark blue T-shirt which read "Lord, Thank You For Law, Gemmill & McFadden. Keep up the good work."

It struck me as a strange trio of players to pick. I've Wikied them and they don't seem to have any club affiliation in common (I thought it might be a Rangers thing or a Celtic thing but nah).

Are those three guys held in special esteem in Scotland, ahead of others? (Dalglish, McCoist, I dunno...)

Gemmill for the goal v Holland, McFadden (probably) for the goal v France in Paris, and Law, no idea.

Don't get me wrong, they're all decent-to-great players.

I mean, it just seems like the equivalent of putting, I dunno, "Charlton, Mariner and Crouch" on an England one.

I was looking for scorers of (technically) winning goals, which sort of wrote Law off a bit... Why not Jim McCalliog?

I know what you mean, it is still a very tenuous link between the three players.

I was trying to think that they were scorers of goals against the reigning Europena or World Champions or something but my head then started to hurt.

Maybe he just really really likes them.

a. It's a ruse to confuse English visitors so you don't realise what we're really up to!

b. Law is Scotland's top goal scorer (along with Dalglish but from less games) and Gemmill and McFadden scored great goals but it does seem a difficult connection to make. None of them played for the Old Firm (yet, McFadden is constantly linked with a move and don't count Walter Smith out of a move for Archie Gemmill to replace the injured Barry Ferguson). Not playing for the Old Firm does seem to help a players status in the eyes of the self styled 'Tartan Army', which may explain the absence of Baxter and Dalglish if it's about exceptional players.

c. Or it could just be that the boys dad is a tosser.

PS My spell checks only suggestion for 'Dalglish' was 'ticklish' which somehow feels very ironic.

It wasn't a home-made effort, by the way. It was one of those trendy, Philosophy Football-type designs in a minimalist font.

It's about neutrality - three highly popular (attacking) Scotland players with no Old Firm connections whatsoever.

Our other greats either have Old Firm connections (Dalglish, McCoist, Baxter, Johnstone, etc) or were brilliant but unspectacular (Leighton, Miller, McLeish).

Even as a diehard Jag, I'm not sure I can label Scruff as "brilliant". Not in the same class as Leighton and Goram, that's for sure.

That sounds plausible, blameless.

I am always dubious about McFadden playing for Birmingham and Everton though with those sort of idiots that link Rangers with Everton and Birmingham (as well as Chelsea and Cardiff sometimes)
