...according to World Soccer:

1) Barcelona V Real Madrid
2) Boca Juniors v River Plate
3) Celtic v Rangers
4) Galatasaray v Fenerbahce
5) Ajax v Feyenoord
6) Lazio v Roma
7) Schalke v Borussia Dortmund
8) Al Ahly v Zamalek
9) Betis v Sevilla
10) Partizan Belgrade v Red Star Belgrade

Any obvious omissions? Benfica v Porto? Liverpool v Man Utd? Flamengo v Vasco da Gama?

The word "derby" obviously means something different out there in the world as opposed to here in the UK...

Barcelona v Real?

Having seen a few on tv the lack of any large away support stops the atmosphere from reaching the heights of an old firm clash which is the only one on that list I've had the pleasure of attending

If you want atmosphere, goals, on pitch violence and comedy defending Villa/Blues takes some beating

The whole point of a derby is two teams from the same city.

If Barcelona v Real Madrid is a derby, then so are Man United v Chelsea and Milan v Juventus.

I think the rest of the world uses "derby" to mean a rivalry, not necessarily one between teams from the same city. I mean, in Mexico America v. Pumas or Cruz Azul is a big deal, but nowhere near America v. Chivas (one of the most obvious ones missing from that list).

I think it's pretty clear from the list that they take "derby" to mean "rivalry".

Or, more specifically, the matches that are played between those involved in the rivalry.

So Newcastle-Sunderland, Cardiff-Swansea, Southampton-Portsmouth aren't derbies?

I prefer the term clasico. And when something is really big, superclasico.

But latin-speakers use Classico to describe this exact type of game. Derby is a completely British term and means something totally different to Classico. In Portugal the big derby is Braga V Guimarães, the big classico is Benfica V Porto.

FWIW, the "Derby d'Italia" is between Inter and Juventus.

I find the list rather strange, unless they have seriously discounted atmosphere in and around the ground on the day as one of their criteria. Barca-Madrid and Boca-River are both great rivalries between storied clubs with huge numbers of supporters, but one's experience of the matches on the ground is dramatically different.

Well that's kind of why I started the thread. What English derby should be in there then, and why? What should it replace in the list?
