Times have changed, Taylor. It's not worth doing it unless you get 50,000 readers per day*
Anyway, I've cheered up now, because I've managed to stop it redirecting to a URL that wasn't properly configured and was, to use the technical terminology, buggering it right up.
twohundredpercent - can i ask who you went with for the hosting/domain/wordpress package?
I think i want something along those lines for something i need to put together, there are a few about that i can see for a few quid a month and i imagine they are mostly much the same but i'd be happier going with one that i know someone else has had a good experience with
It's about £7 per month, but it came with a free domain name, and it comes with everything already loaded on it for Wordpress, cutting out 90% of the pain in the arse of setting it up. It gets paid monthly by Payplan. I am a bit of an idiot when it comes to this sort of thing, but they have got quite a good support thing which works like an IM window - I've availed myself of it a couple of times and they answered my cack-handed questions both times. The only problem that I had was with them configuring the domain name, but that was partly my fault. Wordpress itself is an absolute dream to use - couldn't be easier.
Am using a US service, with the favourable exchange rate and all; they charge $3.95/month, including domain name. Like 200% said, a lot of hosts have a thing in the control panel called Fantastico, which installs Wordpress for you.
My website gets about 40-50 visits a day, which isn't heavy traffic.
Whatever you choose, just make sure it's a Linux or Apache server. (I'm pretty sure the Wordpress software doesn't work on Microsoft servers.)
Yeah, I didn't go for the most basic one, just in case. It's not inconceivable for an incoming link from somewhere like Deadspin or wherever to do a fortnight's worth of traffic in a couple of hours, and I'd rather pay more and not have to worry about it. Ultimately, I can afford it (and I couldn't be arsed to look around too hard for it).
