I've been really surprised at people's reactions to Jay Z throughout all of this. You don't sell however many millions of records he's sold (which will be twice what Oasis have sold) without learning to put on a massive show when the occasion demands it.
When he said in a recent interview that it was important for a hip hop artist (him) to play the Albert Hall, I thought "yeah, yeah, it's not 1985". But he was right - this country's populated by fucking weirdos.
talking about red buttons: Auntie are still showing Glastonbury on their interactive thing, and The Verve have just done a stupendously good 'Bitter Sweet Symphony'... and I have a feeling that 'Sonnet' (now) will be equally as good.
QUOTE: Fairly sure, though not THAT sure, that Neville Staples was one, but her intro to them was so slurred, that it could have been 'some guys who used to be in the Specials crowd and got picked onstage when Jerry Dammers went awry'
But she did 'Monkey Man' and another, which could have been fucking anything. She was appallingly bad.
I just watched Amy Winehouse's Glastonbury set on replay, and as far as I could see, there were no members of The Specials there.
She did several songs by, or associated with, The Specials ("Monkey Man", "You're Wondering Now", "Message To You Rudy", "Hey Little Rich Girl") and made a speech about how they're not getting back together and "this is the closest we're gonna get", and mentioned that she'd sung with Jerry Dammers the night before (at the Mandela gig, I guess), and said the word "heritage" a few times, but I didn't see any actual Specials.
Are you sure you aren't getting confused with the two black dancers/singers who are part of Amy's regular line-up, but who look and dress like they're in The Specials?
well, thats not true.
go see Lynval Golding as part of Pama International and hang on in there and hope you get the encore including some fantastic versions of Specials tracks.
full on Lyn prompted stage invasion included.
for an old 2-tone fan, i cant tell you how wonderful it was.
Amy Winehouse... mentioned that she'd sung with Jerry Dammers the night before (at the Mandela gig, I guess)
I have been meaning to ask, can anyone who attended/watched the broadcast of the Mandela gig confirm the report that Amy changed the chorus of 'Free Nelson Mandela' to ;
"Free Blakey my fella"
I would love it to be true but it seems too much of a newspaper concoction.
