I have to confess to having never been there promptly enought to find out if there is one beforehand, but I have been in one after opening time. SR said it would be rammed by 10:30, so I'd guess there will be.

Event: Stay Beautiful
Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town
Date: Saturday 6th September 2008

If this seems like forever ago, that’s because it was. Sorry. We’ve had a mad-busy few weeks. But this much we can tell you. The September Stay Beautiful came at the end of a summer so dismally rainy that we had to reluctantly cancel the next day’s planned picnic on Primrose Hill.

Anyone craving a fix of flora was not to be disappointed, however. Tony Maggs, Stay Beautiful’s shady Mr Big, was back in town for the first time since New Year’s Eve (cue a mischievous announcement on the mic: “This week, a notorious, infamous and controversial British citizen flew into the UK from Bangkok airport. He’s coming up later… but first, here’s some Gary Glitter), and wearing what looked like an entire botanical garden on his ladyboy headdress, which somehow managed to eclipse the one he wore last time. We’re slightly terrified to imagine what he’s going to come up with next.

The torrential rain didn’t kill the night. It just delayed it by about half an hour, as though everyone got to the end of their street before deciding to turn back and fetch their umbrellas. A slow starter it may have been, but it actually turned into a bit of a classic.

The all-new David Ryder Prangley And The Witches played a storming set which included a snatch of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” (known to men of a certain age as ‘the Formula One music’), and which climaxed with an epic 15-minute spoken-word storytelling number called “The Great Pirate Captain Sugar”. Amazing stuff. It also saw DRP and drummer Robin Guy reunited onstage, much to the excitement of Rachel Stamp-spotters…

There seemed to be an unusually high number of birthdays in the house, which always turns the celebratory mood up a notch, and there was a lovely moment when we played the new Amanda Palmer single for all the Stay Beautiful regulars who’d been extras in the video a few days earlier, and a joyous whirling reel broke out on the floor. (We did our utmost, too, to whip up excitement about the fact that a certain Justin Hawkins would be playing the next Stay Beautiful. But that’s another story.)

There also seemed to be an unusually high percentage of uber-dressed-up people in the house, which always makes us proud. To jog your memories, go and look at the photo gallery, which includes an insane number of pics from September (another reason why it took us so bloody long to write up this report). Narrowing it down to just six for this bulletin was seriously hard.

But anyway, here’s what we played…

I often think it'd be great to go to Stay Beautiful but the pictures from the night make me feel very, very old.

Talking of Amanda Palmer, my brother's girlfriend attended the solo show in Belfast last weekend. The poor dear (Palmer, that is) had arrived at the gig from A&E after a van had run over her foot. Still performed flawlessly. Now that's professionalism.

*STAY BEAUTIFUL GOES GOTH FOR HALLOWE'EN!*
Greetings, my little monsters. Stay Beautiful will be throwing a HALLOWE'EN HORROR PARTY on SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER (All Hallows' Day itself, blasphemers that we are), and your presence is required. Enter of your own free will. Once inside, you will find everything you'd expect at an old-skool kids' Hallowe'en party. Yes, you will hear "The Monster Mash", "Thriller", "Ghostbusters" and all the other HALLOWE'EN ANTHEMS. Yes, you will be invited to enter an APPLE-BOBBING COMPETITION (prizes including DVDs of classic horror movies, stupid rubber masks etc). Yes, you will have your face painted in fake blood by our resident GORE MEDICS if you somehow forget to come in costume. Yes, you will be plied with PUMPKIN SWEETS and CHEWY SKULLS on entry. Yes, you will hear a playlist which leans, even more than usual, towards GOTH and EYELINER ROCK (plenty of Siouxsie, Cure, Placebo, Bauhaus, Manson, Sisters, Murderdolls etc). Yes, you will see a whole load of TRASH-HORROR VISUALS on the overhead screen. But there's one added element, of course, that the average kids' party doesn't provide: the opportunity to get ABSOLUTELY SH1TFACED (see Watering Can Song below). Be there. Dress code: GHOULISH GLAMOUR!

*DIE SO FLUID LIVE!*
Our live band, fittingly, come very much from the dark side (their debut single was even called "Happy Hallowe'en"). Many of you will already be familiar with DIE SO FLUID ( http://www.diesofluid.co.uk / http://www.myspace.com/diesofluid ), and if you aren't, you'll very likely have seen one or two of their members onstage at SB as part of DRP's Witches. Indeed, they're a busy and versatile bunch, from guitarist Drew providing the soundtrack to a documentary on Alan Moore to singer Grog turning up on Top Of The Pops as Sporty Spice's bassist or backing Kelly (and indeed Ozzy) Osbourne, but it's as the fearsome grrl-metal entity DSF that they're best known. This is their long-overdue Stay Beautiful debut as a group, and it comes at the end of a tour in the US, where they've been creating some serious waves lately (including gigs with Mindless Self-Indulgence). We're thrilled and honoured to welcome them back to the UK at our Hallowe'en Horror Party!

*CHEAP BOOZE, FREE BOOZE!*

Drinks at the Purple Turtle are, you'll be glad to hear, served at pretty reasonable, pubby prices anyway (certainly compared to one or two of our previous homes). And, to set you on your way towards alcoholic oblivion, the Purple Turtle serves a special JESUS JUICE cocktail exclusively at Stay Beautiful - a delicious and potentially head-fvcking blend of vodka, Archers, cranberry, lemonade and fresh lime - at £8.50 per pitcher ALL NIGHT (a wide variety of other cocktails will be served at a tenner per pitcher). Furthermore, as aficionados of messy vodka-guzzling will be aware, Stay Beautiful has a somewhat notorious tradition called the WATERING CAN SONG...

*I DON'T WANNA BREAK THESE CHAINS...*
...and this month's Watering Can Song is "POISON" by ALICE COOPER. So, when you hear that sub-Bon Jovi intro creaking into gear and the old man's leather trousers squeaking towards the mic, you know it's time to get wet!

*NEW YEAR'S EVE TICKETS ON SALE!*
The clocks have gone back, there's a chill in the air, and winter - and therefore seasonal hard-partying - comes to mind. You may even be wondering how you're going to spend the last night of the year. Well, wonder no more, because the STAY BEAUTIFUL NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY is happening once again, at our regular venue of The Purple Turtle. Tickets, priced at £10 ADVANCE (£12 on the night, while stocks last) can be bought at Stay Beautiful itself, or in person by cash or cheque (no credit cards, unfortunately) from The Purple Turtle itself (61-65 Crowndale Rd, London NW1 1TN, tel. 020 7383 4976) which opens from 11.00am weekdays and 3.00pm weekends. Full details, including the live band at midnight, will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but we know two things already: firstly, it will run till 4.00am (with the bar remaining open even longer should you wish to continue drinking), and secondly, it's going to be fcking amazing!

*ADMISSION PRICES*
Regular admission prices are as follows. Standard price is £7 (i.e. if you can‘t even be bothered to pick up a flyer, bring some sort of concessionary ID, or wear an SB badge). However, for very early birds, it's just £4 BEFORE 9.30pm, and if you come with a flyer (printable version: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/eflyer.htm ), NUS/DSS card or a Stay Beautiful badge, it's now just £5 ALL NIGHT!

*WHERE IT'S AT*
Stay Beautiful's current home is the PURPLE TURTLE ( http://www.purpleturtlebar.com ), 61-65 Crowndale Rd NW1 (for directions and transport information, see our 'Info' page: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm), just 1 minute's walk from Mornington Crescent tube (and about 5 minutes from Camden Town.

*OPENING HOURS AND AGE POLICY*
Stay Beautiful opens at 9.00pm and closes at 3.00am. Please note that The Purple Turtle is an over-18s venue and ID MAY BE REQUIRED, so if you think you may look underage, please bring one of the following: an NUS card (with a credit card), a passport, or a driving license.

*FUTURE DATES*
Stay Beautiful happens on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly! (See http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm for full dates.)

Did that really happen? As we said beforehand, it isn’t often that Stay Beautiful plays host to a member of a band who has won two Brit Awards, headlined Wembley Arena and the Reading Festival and released an era-defining platinum-selling album (in fact, it’s happened just once before), and the queues outside the door before we’d even opened were a thrilling early sign that a special night was in store. Getting Justin Hawkins to return to Stay Beautiful - six years after the then-unknown Darkness showed up as guest DJs - with his new band Hot Leg was an astonishing coup for the club. It helps to have friends in high places, or at least, friends with high voices.

By 11.00 the place was packed, and straight after Rod Stewart’s “Hot Legs” - you see what we did there? - Justin and the boys took the stage for over an hour of Man Rock heroics and shameless showmanship (shirt removal strip-tease, guitars played round the back of the head, call-and-response silly noises), with a set which, as well as pretty much the entire forthcoming Hot Leg album, also featured a snatch of AC/DC’s “Back In Black”, the unreleased all-conquering power ballad “Come Into My Arms Again” (one of the best songs Justin has ever written), and climaxed with The Darkness’ “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”. Seeing those overhead handclaps from the front to the back, and hearing everyone, as one, shouting “GEE-TAR!”, was one of those Stay Beautiful moments we’ll never forget. Mile-wide grins on every face.

If you want to re-live it, we’ve got some fantastic photos in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then ‘Live bands’), and a whole load of shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub (includes “We Are Hot Leg”, “I’ve Met Jesus”, “Gay In The 80s”, “Trojan Guitar” and “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”). Go and have a look!

Good to see so many newcomers - many of them Hot Leg fans - in the house, and Justin, like the true gent he is, stuck around for a couple of hours afterwards, chatting, signing autographs and posing for photos.

What else to report? It was the debut of our big Stay Beautiful canvas banner (just in case the big flashing neon sign wasn’t enough of a clue as to where you are). Oh, and it was amazing to see the whole place going nuts to “ABC” by The Jackson Five when David R-P played it, on the face of it not a very Stay Beautifulesque act. Oh, and also great to see so many people making an effort to dress up, including one lookalike of Dafydd from Little Britain, and another chap who showed up in a home-made t-shirt with, for some obscure reason, the Stay Beautiful logo rewritten in Russian…

Oh, and speaking of dressing up, I might as well remind you that the next Stay Beautiful is the Hallowe’en Horror Party on Sat 1st Nov, starring Die So Fluid, dress code ghoulish glamour… so get working on your outfits!

Which with no further ado, brings us to what we actually played…

Event: Stay Beautiful’s Hallowe’en Horror Party
Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town
Date: Saturday 1st November 2008

When you ask a crowd like Stay Beautiful’s to dress up in ‘ghoulish glamour’ for a post-Hallowe’en horror party, you know you’re not gonna get a few people in crappy £1.99 plastic Dracula masks and a couple of squirts of fake blood.

In fact, you all went for it so enthusiastically - among other things we spotted a Battle Royale schoolgirl, a Heath Ledger-style Joker, a Snow White after eating the poison apple, a female Beetlejuice, a mortally wounded Alice In Wonderland, a Bride Of Frankenstein, an uncannily accurate Siouxsie lookalike, a (sweet) transvestite nurse, a Columbia and Magenta, a particularly camp Mummy and, of course, your compere for the night, Lord Beelzebub himself - that our Gore Medics didn’t need to open their make-up case once. Good work, people.

The last-ever Hallowe’en-themed Stay Beautiful, in all probability (next year’s nearest SB falls on Nov 7, which is way too late), was an absolute blast. We really went for it with the visuals, spending about four days beforehand burning slideshows of trashy horror images onto DVD, from mediaeval woodcuts of St Eligius dancing with Satan through classic B&W Bela Lugosi films, Hammer exploitation, slasher flicks and video nasties to internet-age mock-ups of Velma getting done doggy-style by Scooby. We do hope you appreciated the effort.

We also gave out buckets full of Poundland’s and Tesco’s finest Hallowe’en sweets, plus over 100 pairs of plastic vampire teeth, one of which ended up in the urinal trough in the gents. Trust me, a set of gaping fangs is not what you wanna see looking up at you when you’ve got your cock in your hand.

Die So Fluid, making their return to the UK after a successful tour of America with Mindless Self Indulgence, provided a suitably noir blast of ear-shredding, face-melting grrrl-rock, and as well as the obvious Hallowe’en classics we DJs kept the rest of the playlist in a dark, sexily satanic, semi-gothic mood. The highlight, however, without question, was the double-header of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Wuthering Heights”. Expressive arm-waving, fist-clenching and lung-bursting mass singing like you’ve never seen.

The apple-bobbing competition (whose contestants were chosen via a preliminary round of Musical Statues) was hilarious. With three goodie bags containing horror DVDs of descending greatness on offer (1st: The Shining, Shaun Of The Dead, original Wicker Man, 2nd: Saw, Night Of The Living Dead, 3rd: Silent Hill) plus a load of hats and rubber masks, our three heroes went for it with terrifying enthusiasm, the winner Gemma dispatching her three Royal Galas in 15 seconds flat. Astounding work.

If you want to re-live it, we’ve got some fantastic photos in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then ‘Live bands’), plus shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. Go see!

Which, pausing only to mention that the NEXT STAY BEAUTIFUL on SATURDAY 6th DECEMBER is the 100th EVER, and is also our annual NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS bash starring ROSIE AND THE GOLDBUG, brings us to what we actually played…

The last-ever Hallowe’en-themed Stay Beautiful, in all probability (next year’s nearest SB falls on Nov 7, which is way too late)

Apologies if I've missed the announcement elsewhere, but does this mean you're planning to end SB within the next couple of years?

No, it doesn't mean that. It just means that it'll be a long time before SB falls as close to Hallowe'en as Nov 1 again (and even that isn't close enough), so we're gonna have to forget that theme in future.
