Kopa and Lucarelli up front.

Does Oleguer count as a left-winger? I can't keep up to date with all this politics mumbo-jumbo.

Paul Breitner and Sócrates, no doubt.

Left-wingers to win the play-off.

edit: not heard about Kopa's political positions. Any chance of an encapsulated round-up?

Wasn't Graham Rix the only Labour voter in the 82 World Cup Squad?

Or is that memory the result of a particularly harrowing nightmare.

I can't remember the details, and don't have the book I read about it in to hand, but he took part in some sort of players union revolt, and turned up in the Paris riots, or something.

No doubt someone will come along soon and pad out the details.

Was Breitner the German player that refused to travel to Argentina 1978?

Yes Ibn, he was.

Oleguer's definitely left-wing. Whether he counts as a footballer is another matter entirely.

I nominated Bernie Slaven on the other thread.

I once read a quote from Gary Lineker, claiming that he was at a meeting in the Houses of Parliament on the day Thatch resigned. He said, "It was not exactly the worst news I've ever heard," which I suppose is "nice."

This is true (according to Hunter Davies' book) - although some others refused to answer the "Who do you vote for?" question. Including King Kev.

Nomination for manager (ironically given the circumstances under which he won the 1978 World Cup): Cesar Luis Menotti.
