I found my Hunter Davies 1982 England World Cup Squad book. Those political answers in full...

Dave Watson: Conservative
Alvin Martin: "Not interested, but will vote as it's a duty" (i.e.: Conservative)
Mick Mills: Conservative
Terry Butcher: "Will always vote Tory - my father's party"
Graham Rix: Labour (yay!)
Glen Hoddle: Liberal
Peter Withe: Conservative
Gary Birtles: "Although I voted Tory last time, I like the look of the SDP" (i.e.: Conservative)

None of the rest answered. My favourite other answer was for Trevor Francis' hobbies:
"Pop music - especially the music of the Electric Light Orchestra." Lovely.

Trev's Shoot column when he was at Blues mentioned ELO nearly every week.

If no-one's mentioned him yet, Danny Blanchflower. Even by the standards of the time (70s, before he infiltrated Stamford Bridge to take Chelsea down) he wrote an unpleasant darkie-bashing column for the Express.

Got to try and stick up for Andy Goram here following on from the 1st post.

Firstly having met him on more than one occasion he might be the greatest ever Scottish goalie but he has the intellect of a large farm animal and an interest in nothing outside sport and ladies. I'd say with some certainty that he has no idea about politics and thinks a left winger is Brian Laudrup.

Secondly he always denied that was why he was wearing the armband although he didn't give a very good reason for it if memory serves.

Lastly and most controversially no doubt. Billy Wright was a member of the UVF whose political wing, the PUP, are most certainly left of centre. Evil, murdering sociopaths yes, but left wing with it, so perhaps it's the other thread he should be considered for?

He wore it on January 2, 1998, at Celtic Park (I was there, as it happens). Billy Wright had been shot six days earlier.

After the game, Goram was quizzed about it, and he said he had been wearing it in memory of an elderly female relative, who had just passed away. A plausible enough excuse, you might think, except for two factors:

* Goram and his relative had reportedly not been close.

* The woman had died the previous September.

Incidentally, the guy who shot Billy Wright died of cancer yesterday.

Here's another piece of evidence against Goram (who I agree was a brilliant goalkeeper):

Pretty damning isn’t it. I don’t think it really changes what I wrote mind you. Goram is an imbecile and allowing himself to be photographed like this only proves that, but he’s not the first Old Firm player to be caught like this and he probably won’t be the last.
The photo was part of a hatchet job done by his then estranged and ever so slightly embittered wife in the Sun. It ran for about 4 days and was one revelation after another, all of which he denied. I imagine like most of these things there was an element of truth in some of it but it should also be taken with a pinch of salt.

I didn’t know that bloke died yesterday, was he still in jail? I lived in Belfast when that took place and remember the event clearly.

BTW I’ve given you some stick on the ‘Senna’ thread!!
