Really disappointing. Terribly so. Honestly, they're not what I hopes for. But I'll still soldier on, eat my way through them. I just wont enjoy it as much as I expected to.

Perhaps that's the problem? I hyped them up so much in my mind that the reality could never surpass the fantasy.

Any herbs? Parsley, sage, rosemary, any other green things in jars at the back of the cupboard that the labels have fallen off of?

Just black pepper. But look, it wouldn't have mattered if I'd covered them in magical herbs from Narnia and/or the Forest Moon of Endor, there was no saving these total tuber let-downs.

I've just got to mark them down as an exercise in experience and learn from my mistakes. It's all part of growing up.

Were they waxy or floury potatoes? That's the key.

Well there you go. Mystery solved. It wasn't my fault, it was the potatoes. Stubborn and unrelenting. Not willing to cooperate and bow to my desires for a tasty brekkie.

It was your fault. Potatoes are not a breakfast food.

I'm on about potatoes not being a breakfast food. What did you think I was on about?

Why not? I don't know, I don't make the rules. I just know what they are.

If you put potato into it, it becomes, at the very least, "brunch".

A lot of people par-boil first. I used to as well until someone told me the best way to prepare fried potatoes is to cook them completely, shake them in the pot to get them fluffy and then into a hot pan, with just enough oil. Don't put too many in at once or they'll stew rather than fry. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. If you've some parsley handy, bung that in too.

My dad just uses the left over boiled ones from the previous night and they're great. I suspect he does too many on purpose so he can eat them fried next morning, in similar fashion to his habit of "accidentally" doing too many roast potatoes so he can have them later on, cold and with a dash of salt.

Fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln) are very much an acceptable breakfast food in Germany. A good Bauernfrühstück is hard to beat*.
