So, my garbage disposal is in a state of disrepair. It is acting as though it is jammed (motor hums, but blades do not move). I've tried all of the easily googled methods of fixing (rotating through the base with allen wrench, manually moving blade plate in drain). But it doesn't appear to actually be jammed. There's no blockage that I can find. Is it likely kaput? Or is there something basic that I am missing here?

Given the cost of a new unit, I'd probably end up getting a new one rather than having someone over to fix the old one.

All advice is welcome.

Sounds like a burnt-out motor.

Replacing the whole thing is much more economical than trying to repair.

Don't try freeing the blades with your fingers while turning it on and off.

Well you did say "all" advice.

Thanks Purves - I was afraid that was the case.

Rogin - that reminds me of a discussion I have had with people about how they will occassionally be driving down the road and thing "I wonder what it would be like to just drive off of this cliff?" You know, those self destructive thoughts that come up in our minds on occassion.

I mean, we all have those thoughts sometime, right? Right?.....

We do. It's a natural tendency of the brain to occasionally consciously acknowledge the boundaries of our behavior.

I think this is part of what freaks me out about being in a tight crowd. Those boundaries start to close in, literally and metaphorically.

It sounds like some thread or other is stripped or a bearing has gone bad. Most likely, you should replace it. How much do they cost?

Standing on the platform as a train's pulling in; that's the one for me. I always take a step back as it nears me because such is the turmoil some sort of movement is inevitable. Force of habit ensures that it's backwards.
