I went to see this at the NFt on Tuesday. It's really extraordinary bit of work, by Charles Burnett who directed the magnificent To Sleep with Anger amongst other things. It's his UCLA graduation film, finally released after theirty years thanks to a large donation by Stephen Soderbergh amongst others. It's visually extraordinary, like an Italian Neo-realist film, perhaps early Visconti, set in Watts in the 1970's. It has an immense sensuality, arresting compositions and heart breaking observations of enormous compassion and insight.

Nothing much happens but it's the kind of film which changes the way you see the world when you come out into the light.

the website is here

Go see it, OTF movie buffs. It's on at the Barbican and the NFT and later, no doubt, on tour to arthouses around the land.

Yeah, this finally got a re-release in the US last year. The thing that was holding up a proper release on video was the cost of the music rights. I'm not sure how they worked it out, but it's on DVD now.
