Last night I watched Starship Troopers for the first time. In the scene where Rico and his love rival (the one with someone else's hair balanced on the top of his head) fight over Denise Richards, beneath the general hubbub of the barracks is, quietly but unmistakeably, Fade into You by Mazzy Star. WTF?
I know the guy who's responsible for "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100 appearing in American Psycho.
An American friend of his, who was involved in the film, called him to ask for some suggestions for the soundtrack. He tried to think of the least Patrick Batemanesque song possible, just to take the piss, and was amazed when "Love Plus One" actually showed up in the film.
In the film 'Jindabyne' there is a nasty punch-up at a barbecue, underscored by The Go Betweens' 'Streets Of Your Town'. Yes it's an Australian film, but still...
Good. Satirical elements aside, just the concept of clean-cut, good-looking, over-confident, all-American youth getting smushed by large psychotic insects is crowd-pleasing satisfaction all by itself.
Well, if you suck their brains out and bite them in half I suppose you could easily surmise that they didn’t spend their evenings sitting around the drawing-room piano, drinking Cabernet Sauvignon and singing Noel Coward songs.
I was walking ‘cross Klendathu,
On the way to have some tea,
When I saw some Starship Troopers
a-coming after me.
So I spiked them with my mandibles
And crushed them with my jaws,
And that, my dear,
Is how, I fear,
You get rid of frightful bores.
Don’t put arachnids on the stage, Mr. Heinlein,
Don’t put arachnids on the staaaaaaage!
