Rotherham United are moving away from Milmoor to play at the Don Valley Stadium (in Sheffield) next season. I knew they had money problems but didn't see this coming at all.
Yes, given that the Booth family thought they had them over a barrel with their ridiculous deal this is either a) a good bargaining position or b) a much needed escape route.
Not that any of that will make it any easier for their fans though, hope it all works out.
That is a real shame - Millmoor is/was one of my favourite grounds. Of course, Simon Inglis hated it because it wasn't surrounded by church spires and majestic oaks, but I always thought it characterful and homely, and when a reasonable crowd was in, there was a great atmosphere.
As Harry said, this cloud may yet prove to have a silver lining. Good luck to all Millers fans on here.
Fuck. Terrible news, and not just because Millmoor was the scene of one of my greatest ever football moments. Decent, if scrappy, characterful ground with a fine away end.
Can't see how this is going to ease the financial situation, long-term, mind - even if the crippling Booth rents are no longer a menace.
Very troubling news. Firstly, Don Valley is about five miles from Rotherham. The club will probably try to put a spin on it, but it's not in Rotherham. It's in Sheffield.
Secondly, it's a 25,000 capacity athletics stadium. 4,000 or so Millers are going to be rattling around in there like peas in a can, and creating anything approaching an atmosphere is going to be nigh on impossible (it's difficult enough at Brighton with, say, 6,000 people in an 8,800 capacity stadium).
Thirdly, as E10 says, there's the issue of revenue. Paying rent and probably keeping a nice, fat zero from the other match day revenues such as food means that they're going to be, unless they've got a deal that is different to any other club that has had to rent somewhere that I've ever come across, earning anything like a profit from home matches will be out the window.
I sincerely hope that it is only a short-term solution. It's definitely nothing like a satisfactory long-term answer so far as I can see, and while getting the avaricious Booths out of their hair may seem appealing, the complications could prove to be just as troublesome as any problems they've had over the last three or four years or so. Something about it hints at desperation.

This is the problem we face. It's shit. Though we try and find ways around it, like refusing to buy food inside the ground, and go to the 'official' burger vans outside.
But still, fucking hell. Sorry about this Rotherham lot. It sounds really, really shit.
It can't be that dear can it? Don Valley's owned by the council. We had our school sports day there once. And I think the only way to do any catering there is through burger vans on the concourse. I was told once that Rotherham are sponsored by Pukka pies, this being the reason they sold vegan pies there. Hopefully they can keep this product range while playing just 40 minutes' tram ride from my parents house.
Rotherham is always a good trip. Decent pubs and a great away end
We played our first game back in Division 2 there in August 2003. 90 degree plus heat in the stand with the tin shack roof behind the goal. Seriously hotter than any other football match I've ever been too.
Commiserations to the Rotherham fans on here - Gangster Octopus? What an absolute shitter
