Some of my favourite collections include Junot Diaz's Drown, Gates of Eden by Ethan Coen, and Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes.

Saki is excellent. I always enjoy PG Wodehouse's short stories (a lot of his novels are basically a collection of short stories). And what everyone else said about Damon Runyon (unless anyone said he was rubbish and I missed it).

I'm just reading a magnificent collection called 'What Salmon Know' by Ellwood Reid, published in 1999. Perfectly paced tales of mostly alcoholic fuck-ups in the great American backwards of beyond.

Jackie Kay is well worth a look. And Alasdair Gray. For the horror aficionados, Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen match Lovecraft and James. Oh, and Ambrose Bierce.
