QUOTE: I think Dundee United have previous in this too, don't they - weren't they once nailed on for a double, but then lost both the Cup Final and their last league game 3-0, or something?
We should have won the league in 86, the year everybody remembers as the one Hearts threw away.
Celtic and Hearts finished level on points with United 3 behind. After we lost 3-0 to Hearts in the "league decider" (nobody thought Celtic had a chance at that stage) the players gave up and we lost 2-1 at home to St Mirren and 2-1 away to Clydebank. Obviously, we would have won the league if we'd won those two. Hearts also beat us 1-0 in the Scottish Cup semi after we played them off the park.
Last night's result hilariously now means that Rangers will need to rely on their new mortal enemy doing them a favour against Celtic in the last game. If we lose, we will obviously be accused of lying down and rolling over - what else can you expect from a club with 4 Irish players that used be Dundee Hibernian and has had a green away strip twice in recent years?
Albeit that since 86, it only involves 2 teams, but Scotland does put on a tight finish to its Leagues.
I remember the 86 well. A few years ago I got talking to a bloke at a work drinks thing. We got on well and got pissed. I've always been nervous declaring a scottish team, but I have a slight yearning for Celtic. Anyway this bloke was a Celtic fan too. [he assumed that I knew who he was, but I didn't]. So well later on, when he was pole-axed, he declared, "Sure I won the League for Celtic". I thought he was joking until I realised I was actually talking to Albie Kidd.
Top bloke he was too.
I was at Easter Road watching the Hibs-United game the day Kidd scored those goals. The atmosphere in the last few minutes was magnificent.
It was 1-1 with about 5 minutes to go when Stuart Beedie scored the winner for United. At almost the exactly the same time, Albert Kidd scored the first for Dundee. We then had the extraordinary sight of thousands of Hibs supporters apparently cheering wildly just as the opposition had scored against them (obviously, we'd all worked out was going on).
As the last few minutes played out, and news came through that Kidd had scored a second, there was a real carnival atmosphere in the ground. Feeling bitter and twisted about what Hearts had done to our season (and they were a really ugly team to watch), I enjoyed it immensely.
Alby Kidd has lived in Adelaide for years- played for West Adelaide Hellas in 89-90 in the old NSL, coached state league clubs here for years, and currently does radio commentaries on Adelaide United's A League games for 5rph.
He sounds like a bit of a perfectionst- he has a thing about "strikers not doing their job and putting away easy chances...."
It looks like Gretna are a step closer to going out of business. The adminstrator set a deadline for bids of midnight on 17 May and that passed without an acceptable bid being made, although their latest statement claims that they are still negotiating with an interested party. The adminstrators then met with staff this morning and all of Gretna's staff have been made redundant.
Now, when are the BBC going to show repeats of their Living The Dream documentary.
Was wondering what happened there. Don't have the Setanta pay channel so I'm watching updates on the BBC website, and there was four bookings for unsporting behaviour at 29:10.
