An unanticipated side show of the drive up to Hull this week came on the M1 near Nottingham. Slow moving vehicles in the middle lane overtaking even slower moving vehicles in the left-hand lane.

And one driver in a saloon in the outside lane belligerently sticking to 65mph and refusing to take opportunities to pull in and release the blockage building up behind him. You've all been there before, I'd imagine.

As we eventually overtook, I turned from the passenger seat to direct my best ferocious glare at the miscreant. Imagine my surprise when the driver turned out to be a well-known face from the world of football.

A packet of smarties to the first person who guesses who. Your only clue is that his behaviour kinda fits with his public profile...

I can't imagine that Bates does his own driving? Not sure i'd have recognised Dave Richards although i know him by reputation. Colin was probably quietly imploding somewhere following the night before.

And no, not Howard Wilkinson.

No, not Freddie Shepherd.

Another clue. Much as I wanted to, I couldn't have used an expletive that I hadn't already shouted at him on several previous occasions.

65mph is too fast for it to be David Pleat, isn't it?

This isn't as good as my 'My mum just ran over Bobby Charlton in a golf cart' thread.

Was it Big Ron?

I've not seen that thread. But I don't think I could ever match something with that title.

Here, in fact, is the man.
