One slightly disappointing aspect of the second episode was the Barney character. He was so obviously originally written as Sophie's brother from S4 but, as the actor who plays him is now an aspiring indie star (he's the singer in Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong) and is presumably unavailable, they created a new, near-identical character. Still very funny though. How many other comedies could reference Ian McEwan and get away with it?

Yeah, I thought that. There was no explanation as to why Sophie's dad would be ferrying his nephew around everywhere.

As disappointments go that's a fairly minor one, I think.

Indeed. Series one: patchy but likeable. Series two: bafflingly awful.

Horse - can I say how much you made the missus and I chuckle with your RT write-up of the F-Word last night? We've been taking the piss out of that dramatic recipe shtick of his for ages. Nail! Hammer! Head!... Done!

Ha, yes of course you can! Thank you.

He kept doing it as well, didn't he? "Baste! . . . Roll! . . . Rest!"

I don't know about you but in our house we always say "Done . . . you cunt!" when he's finished. You can tell that's what he wants to say.

Ha!

No, I confess to being a tad cruder than that. So he's making love to his wife, well, you get the picture:

take wife! foreplay for 5 minutes! open legs! inert cock! Thrust! Ejaculate... done!

Anyone see last night's PS? I thought it was well written, as usual, but just not that funny. Ramping up the cringe factor seems to scale down the laugh factor to me.

Aaahhh. Just watched it. Pain pain pain. And the bit with the £20 note and the internal monologue about 'Queenie' was brilliant.

Well duh. See also The Office.

Doesn't make it any less watchable, in fact the reverse. It's very well written. It doesn't have to be laugh out loud. The pay-off of cheap one-liner gags can sink the writing in many a promising comedy. Yes I'm talking to you Lee Mack, Harry Enfield, Adrian Edmun... no, not Adrian Edmunson. His series has no redeeming features at all.

Adrian Edmondson hasn't done anything good since the last series of "Bottom".

(and I appreciate that there may be a large number of people who want to replace "since" with "including").

I didn't enjoy Friday's much.

Tessa Wyatt, who played Jeremy's mum, actually looked a lot more like she ought to have been Sophie's (i.e. Olivia Colman's) mum. Weird bit of casting, that.
