Re:so did Celtic win the UEFA cup or what? 1 Week ago
I think really this deserves its own thread as a frankly huge Portuguese football club (Boavista) has in all likelihood probably seen its last days.
Porto have escaped this basically unscaved, I really can't see what difference a suspended or unsuspended Pinto da Costa makes, and a €150,000 fine plus 6 point deduction ((in)effective immediately) is no punishment whatsoever.
However, relegation to the second division and a fine of €180,000 for Boavista, a club without two pennies to rub together, surely means they cannot continue to function. The whole board has already resigned, probably to resolve themselves from any liability when the receivers come in.
I haven't spoken to erwin today, in fact I'm going to leave it a few days before contacting him as I guess he must feel pretty f*cking awful right now.

The offences happened the year after Porto won the UEFA Cup you say? Bribing refs you say?
Hmmmm, last minute freekick at Old Trafford. Seems to me that UEFA should strip Porto of the CL title that year and give it straight to Man Utd, who were the moral winners anyway.

It was ruled out for offside. Scholes was a good couple of feet onside, so it was a really bad call from the assistant, but one of those you get from time to time.
If I was suspecting corruption from Porto around that time, I wouldn't be looking at that decision, bad as it was.

Well it's a story about internal domestic corruption allegations in the Portuguese league. Only supporters of a Big Four English Premier League club could somehow manage to make it a story about Manchester United.

Oh come on. EVERYONE can make it a story about Manchester United. It was only a matter of time. We, on OTF, just happen to be at the vanguard of sports comment, and thus it cropped up here first.

Going back to the original story, why was the punishment to Boavista so much greater than that levied against Porto? Porto's six point deduction when they're already twenty points clear at the top of the table is obviously ridiculous, but Boavista's punishment doesn't seem to be proportionally the same.

Influential supporters in high places?

That's no fair on supporters of Big Four Premier League clubs. As the opening post proves, Old Firm fans are equally capapble of making a domestic Portugese story about conspiracies against their club. The same failings abound.

Oh for fuck's sake, E10, wasn't it totally obvious that my post was an ironic take on exactly what you're saying? Is there an irony smiley I can use next time, just in case?
