Are you thinking of these guys?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of many leftish parties that use blue; the colour is strongly associated with the right (and the former royal family) here.

Was there a badge that the above one was taken from? It's nearly the one I mean, but not quite. I didn't mean the colour (blue is seen as a right wing colour in the UK too) just the tree.

I remember going to some outdoor left-fest thingy in Frosinone in 93-ish, and seeing some tree-based badge everywhere.

93-ish? At what sounds likely to have been a "Festa de l'Unita"?

That would have been these guys:

Aye, that would be it. Doesn't look much like the Wigan badge, now I see them together. Sorry for the diversion.

The first question that springs to mind when I think of what a club crest should look like is this: how difficult would it have been for me to draw on my pencil case when I was at school?

(I don't have a pencil case any more - another one of the small losses that comes with the progression to adulthood)

The badge I posted came from a resourceful Wigan Athletic fan who searched out the “Intellectual Property website” (I know very little about where these sorts of things get registered) and found the badge – before the official release of the shiny one posted later in the thread. Wigan’s old badge is apparently the same as the local council, I assume it’s actually a town ‘emblem’ that I assume the football club picked up upon years ago.

I have the quite marvellous FOOTBALL CLUBS OF ENGLAND AND WALES poster on my wall at home and from what I remember most of the badges of football league clubs have changed since the poster was made (in the early 70s). Club badges seem to be one thing that teams in the football league don’t really mind changing, in the UK at least.

I was reading about the Austrian Bundesliga online this week and they take it a step too far, often incorporating the sponsor’s logo into the club badge. It also appears that only one club in the top flight have ever resisted having the name of their club changed on the behest of a sponsor – Red Bull Salzburg being the most horrific example. Also, there seem to be far too many teams playing in green, but that’s another topic for another day..

mnb, I've read that the (red and green) badge that you posted was Wigan Athletic's badge at the time of their election to the Football League (which makes some sense, as they originally played in red and white, though had changed to blue quite a few years before they were elected).

Most Austrian fans don't pay any attention to the sponsor names, and the fact that they change quite frequently makes that relatively easy to do. That said, Rapid are to be complimented on never having sullied the club name with that of their current sponsor.

In the unlikely event that Harry hasn't seen this yet, 'Gladbach are going back to their "Cardiff" kit next season, and this may well be an indication of the direction his own lot may take with their version:

That's very nice, and a welcome return to greater prominence for the green element of the kit after a few years of schwarz-weiss.

I'd even think about getting one.

It's OK but the placement of the sponsor logo and stripe(s) clash

Though as you've pointed out before, it is difficult for that not to happen with the motif and a sponsor that doesn't have a circular logo or something of the sort.

I actually thought they did a decent job with Kyocera; a multi-line logo would be much worse. I would have made the badge a bit bigger, but after some of their recent efforts (they had one of those Udinese-style Lotto kits with the bendy stripes), it is a big improvement.

Why not line up the right hand side of the green stripe and the right hand side of the Kyocera "box" though? Why not no box but Kyocera's logo in red?

Must do better.

Are Portsmouth playing their 39th game in space next season?!

Also, are they really bothering to commemorate 110 years? Or have I misread it?

Jeez, that's not that they're wearing on Saturday is it?

No; this is what they are Saturday:

And yes, it's their 110th anniversary. That was the first thing I noticed. The badge also looks to be one of those plasticised abortions, instead of being properly embroidered.
