OK, here's the deal. The CAROLINE OF BRUNSWICK ( http://www.myspace.com/carolineofbrunswick ) is our favourite pub in Brighton. It's not our local, by any means, but it's so good that we often get a bus across town just to drink there. (It's basically Brighton's main goth pub, but don't run away in horror: it's a lot cooler and more stylish than that makes it sound. Honestly, the Caroline rocks.)

And they've very kindly asked me, i.e. SIMON PRICE from STAY BEAUTIFUL ( http://www.myspace.com/staybeautifulclub ) and JENNA (also from Stay Beautiful) to DJ there on SATURDAY 21st JUNE.

We've called this one-off event DIE YOUNG STAY PRETTY (a reference to the Blondie song as well as a tie-in with Stay Beautiful), and we're gonna be playing a selection of eyeliner rock, 80s alternative, glam sleaze, new romantic, old skool goth, shouty grrl music, post-punk etc in the main downstairs room. Essentially the same sort of music we play at SB, but minus the pop element, and with more of an emphasis on retro alternative classics. And played at a reasonable, non-earshredding volume so you can hear yourself think and talk.

Come along, drink, chat, dance if you can find the space, play pool if you can get on the table, have a sneaky fag in the beer garden, hassle us for that Tubeway Army album track we forgot to bring, whatever.

Oh, in case you've never been before, The Caroline Of Brunswick is on Ditchling Road, next to The Level. And we're gonna be on from 9pm to 2am. And, being a pub, obviously it's FREE to get in.

See you there! x

Event: Die Young Stay Pretty
Venue: The Caroline Of Brunswick, Brighton
Date: Sat 21st June 2008

A good pub. Some good people. Some good music. A simple formula for a good night out, and it worked.

This was a one-off session, named after the Blondie song (with a nod to Stay Beautiful), at our favourite Brighton boozer, and it was pretty busy from start to finish. We kept the music mainly in a retro 80s alternative/post-punk/vintage goffick vein, causing extraordinary scenes over by the pool table (a bunch of old punks pogoing to Billy Idol and The Stray Cats), and even a bit of a dance floor (it was “Close To Me” by The Cure that really got it going, which I never saw coming…)

Mental end to the evening, when a bunch of chavs invaded the pub, turned nasty and had to be fended off, causing a mini-riot on the pavement followed by a tense lockout reminiscent of the zombies surrounding the Winchester in Shaun Of The Dead (and leaving one unfortunate lad with a bloody nose), till the (hot) fuzz arrived.

I mean, who knew that baseball-hatted hoodie-wearers wanted to hear “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” that badly? Tossers.

Anyway, big thanks to everyone who showed up, and here’s what we played…

A door creaks open. A lone figure moves apprehensively into the opulently decorated room, marveling at the grandeur of his surroundings. He walks over to a large refrigerator, opens it and inspects the contents. After a moment's consideration he selects a bottle of expensive champagne, wrenches out the cork and takes a swig from the bottle. Pausing only to wipe his mouth on the back of his sleeve, he sits down at a large table, upon which are situated a silver cigar case, several meticulously-arranged lines of cocaine, a rolled fifty pound note and a box of Revels. After more careful thought, he opens the Revels, takes a handful and reclines in his seat.

Ah... so this is OTF's exclusive DJ suite. After years of being turned away at the door with nothing but a firm arm and a curt sneer, I've finally been waved right on through. Well, I must say it's everything I expected it to be. I can see why you've enjoyed yourself so much. Look, there's Spearmint Rhino's spare horns, waxed and ready for use. Over there on the mantelpiece I can see Carcass has hung his funk thong, right next to Piscesboy's atomizer of essence de Clique. And what's that on the bear rug? It must be a jar of Super Sharp Shooter's Big Sexy body rub, judging by the way that handmaiden is fingering the lid.

Mmm? What's that? What am I doing here? Oh, don't say you were one of the unfortunate few who didn't get in. Look, if you will be late, or insist on living in such provincial backwaters as London or America, what do you expect? The flyers were out in several Lancaster pubs for a over week before my sets, so I can't see as you have any excuse... look, there's no need to feel ostracized. Because, get this - when I play a set, you don't just get the playlist, you get the set itself. Oh yes - thanks to Traktor's little red 'Rec' button, you can recreate the intense magic of my special moments anywhere! Hey, come on. Just pull on a fishnet t-shirt, scrawl little patterns all over your face in biro, turns the lights out - no, all of them - and prepare to relive the frenzied, soul-numbing experience of my The Dark Side of the Lune Sonic Descent into the Blackest Pits of HELL !!!

Set 1 - Gently Beguiling

Kelley Polar - Roseband
Client - Lights Go Out
Marsheaux - What a Lovely Surprise
Glass Candy - Metal Gods
Zeitgeist - Black Milk
Black Affair - It's Real
Roisin Murphy - Movie Star
Ladytron - Burning Up
M83 - Graveyard Girl

Set 2 - Casual Abandon

Justice - Genesis (intro)
Motor - 1x1
The Presets - This Boy's Alive
Ebony Bones - We Know All About You*
Crystal Castles - Courtship Date
Cut Copy - Unforgettable Season
Midnight Juggernauts - Into the Galaxy
Fox n' Wolf - In Yr Underwear
Muscles - The Lake
M83 - Graveyard Girl**

* Turned out to be in mono, FFS. I don't know, you can't trust these dodgy rips.

** What? Yes. Yes, I know. No, I didn't notice. Yes, everyone else did. Look, it was a long night.

(Btw - I ought to point out that, when downloading from Megaupload, where KM's downloads ar stored, the 3-letter 'password' that they request you type in on the front page needs to be done in CAPITALS. If you use lower case, it just seems that nothing happens. I discovered this, the other day whilst in download-frenzy. Oh - and they're a only-one-download-at-a-time site, too.)

I haven't played those mixes yet, KM (I only downloaded them this morning, before work) but, given what you were saying about the typically narrow minds of the goth crowd, you got away with quite a decent and varied selection there - particularly Marsheaux (bleep-bleep-hoorayyy!!!) and M83. I'm looking forward to hearing it.

No worries about the download thing - I wasn't having a moan. One just has to learn to download one file at a time ...from Megaupload, Rapidshare, Zshare and Badongo simultaneously, that's all! :-)

Oh, regular night. Or as regular as that crazy goth gang get. I'd just been pestering their cabal leader for a go on the decks and finally, he cravenly capitulated.

It went down pretty well. The first set was early on and is therefore a bit tinkly-bonk. The second one was supposed to be a bit more, um, extreme, but the Cut Copy and Midnight Jugs stuff had even the most flourescent cyber-devotees capering around like the foppish pansies they are.

Still waiting for my invitation to do next month, mind.

KM:

Having listened to those sets now (very nice - good stuff!) I have to ask just what the split of the crowd was like? i.e., what proportion was trad-goth/deathrocker, what proportion was cyber-goth and what proportion was metal-fan-with-eyeliner?
