OK, I know there's already a separate thread for Stay Beautiful (and maybe BSL?), but I propose a special thread for posting our one-off/guest DJing activities, so that the board doesn't get overloaded with self-promoting spam (of which I am probably more guilty than anyone). Even if nobody else joins in this thread, it's probably a good idea to enforce a bit of discipline on myself...
Right, to set the ball rolling:
Attention BRIGHTON people: Simon at Da Doo Ron Ron on Fri 25th April!
I've been living here by the seaside since September, so it's about bloody time that I took the plunge into the Brighton club scene.
I'm honoured that my debut* is to be at DA DOO RON RON ( http://www.dadooronronclub.com / http://www.myspace.com/dadooronron60sgirlgroups ), the absolutely brilliant Sixties girl group/femme-pop night, at KOMEDIA on Gardner St on FRIDAY 25th APRIL (it runs from 11pm-3am). I'll be spinning a vinyl-only set between 12.30 and 1.30, and you can expect to hear the likes of Dusty, Nancy, Sandie, Supremes, Ronettes, Vandellas, Chiffons, Lulu, plus a few juicy surprises.
I've been to DDRR once before and it's just the most joyous fun, I tell you. I'd love it if you could get your white boots on, beehive your hair, come along and show me some support!
I've been told I can have a CHEAPO £4 GUEST LIST (as opposed to the usual price of £6), so if you hit me back in time with your name(s), I'm sure we can sort that out.
*OK, I actually DJed at the Zap club way back in 1996 on the Romo tour, but that doesn't count.
Event: Da Doo Ron Ron
Venue: Komedia, Brighton
Date: Friday 25th April, 2008
Wow, that was fun. It’s fair to say that my Brighton DJing debut at the awesome Da Doo Ron Ron was a resounding success: I kept the floor filled with Sixties chicks and mod boys dancing enthusiastically throughout with my strictly vinyl-only selection (even if they were a bit bemused by the fizzy drink commercial, the French Eurovision winner, and the hippy mystic jazz number), and I got so over-excited I started doing spins, finger-pointing, testifying and brandishing my leopard-pattern hand-fan along with the tunes. And, if I do say so myself, what tunes they were. In fact, with the addition of 20 minutes’ worth from my spares list, it’ll make one killer CDR when I get around to it. As I cued up my final tune by top wifebeating duo the Turners, the lifting lever on the left-hand Technics deck broke off in my hand. I wasn’t being rough with it, honest. It was the power of SOUL. Here’s what I played…
The Supremes - “Things Go Better With Coke”
Martha Reeves And The Vandellas - “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave”
The Ikettes - “Peaches And Cream”
Maxine Nightingale - “Right Back Where We Started From”
Etta James - “Tell Mama”
Dusty Springfield - “Stay Awhile”
Sandie Shaw - “Long Live Love”
Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger Trinity - “This Wheel’s On Fire”
Gloria Jones - “Tainted Love”
France Gall - “Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son”
Nancy Sinatra - “These Boots Are Made For Walking”
Lulu - “The Boat That I Row”
Betty Everett - “It’s In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)”
The Velvelettes - “Needle In A Haystack”
Millie - “My Boy Lollipop”
The Shangri-Las - “Give Him A Great Big Kiss”
Fontella Bass - “Rescue Me”
The Toys - “A Lover’s Concerto”
Shocking Blue - “Send Me A Postcard”
The Crystals - “He’s A Rebel”
The Supremes - “Stoned Love”
Dusty Springfield - “I Only Want To Be With You”
Limmie & Family Cookin’ - “You Can Do Magic”
Ike & Tina Turner - “River Deep, Mountain High”
Hah, I just received a bit of anonymous no-reply hatemail from someone who said my set list was a "joke" and any "proper mod" would laugh at it, and I'd probably get "twatted" at a scooterist rally. (You know, as if I was doing it for people like them.)
