AG: no they don't, MLS and USOC cards are completely separate. However you may be in luck because after Blanco got his red, a DCU person tried to hustle him off the field, after which followed (cut/paste from bigsoccer): As others of described, Blanco got in the face of the DCU staffer and head-butted him square in the face. This infuriated a senior executive who immediately notified police and asked to have Blanco restrained. Blanco shoved the officers and tried to slap one of them in the face. They didn't appear to end up cuffing him, but as they walked him to the locker room and around the corner he apparently got very physical again and it took between 5 and 10 minutes to be restrained and then the police literally locked Quasimodo in the locker room.
IF ACCURATE AND TRUE, oh boy.
Seattle and KC just began the 2nd period of extra time still goalless.
Just got back from the Seattle KC match. We should have won it twice in regular time, hitting the crossbar twice. Although pleased to see us do it in pens if we must.
Quite pissed off we don't get another take at Dallas this year, since we lost to them in the semis last go through.
Please please, any of you good supporters with MLS clubs: get your group to come to Seattle for a match next season. I can't even begin to describe how dull and boring our support is. Imagine drunk Americans imitating British hooligans, as if there is some sort of divine aspect to things British. Even heard our players referred to as lads tonight. Sigh. Seattle may have been one of the worse picks for MLS, hard to enjoy a game when you have two hands full of starbucks.....
Sorry AG, but red cards in the USOC don't carry over to MLS (as they shouldn't).
According to the terrible DC play-by-play radio guy, Blanco initially got his red for kicking the ball at Burch. He then apparently got in his face, and had to be restrained by the police after being confronted by a DC official. It's pretty much impossible to know exactly what really happened, though.
Despite the Fire loss, last night was another fantastic night of Open Cup action -- USL teams stretching MLS teams to breaking point or beyond, blood spilled, etc. We could end up with Charleston or Seattle (would the MLS team get the spot?) in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Just makes it all the more frustrating US Soccer does not promote properly (or really at all) what could be the domestic jewel in its crown.
Including DC's goals, John Thorrington killing Jaime Moreno from behind, and a just barely caught Blanco winding up and punching Clyde Simms in the stomach, and ending up on the ground hard courtesty (presumably) of Marc Burch right after. Wow.
PSounder, all Seattle fans have to do is take a short drive down to Portland to see how real support is done. Shame they didn't get the MLS franchise there.
Though still looking forward to visiting Seattle next year anyway.
It's Blanco, what's new? And I'm not really going to believe a DC fan's account on BigSoccer as an accurate report of events, to be honest. Let the message boards explode and the dust settle.
He's embarassed his family and the Mexican people with that "punch". Clearly he didn't learn anything from growing up watching all of those Televisa boxing shows from the Olympic Auditorium in LA.
It's also just dawned on me that the "USOC" is the United States Open Cup and not the US Olympic Committee, whose relevance to anything I've been trying to figure out all day.
Why is it that US soccer afficionados are so fond of acronyms? It's just plain weird.
QUOTE: Then, after Namoff's header gave United the lead, an already bitter rivalry heated up even more.
Both Chicago star Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Burch were red-carded in the 108th minute after an altercation in front of the teams' benches. Burch shoved Blanco over after the Mexican national team star punched the ball out of midfielder Clyde Simms's hands. Burch will miss the semifinal to serve a one-game punishment.
"He came up and swung as hard as he could and tried to hit the ball and hit Clyde in the stomach," Burch said. "He thinks he can do whatever he wants. I went over and I pushed him. I didn't hit him, I didn't go after him, I just pushed him down. He's not going to do that to my teammate. He stood up and tried to poke Clyde in the eye and cut his eye open.
"I don't like him, I don't think he's a good person. He's a great player but when he's out there he's doing stuff that you shouldn't be able to get away with."
I like that - he's "not a good person." Can't wait to see what happens next time we play you guys (looks like not until mid August).
I love that MLS has a real supervillain. Not someone that people don't like or respect, but a real, bona fide black hat wearing villain.
Seattle fans make the trips to Vancouver and Portland, and vice versa. The problem is the supporters group we have is absolute shit, and the rest of the crowd is the soccer mom and kids type deal.
Here, I can explain their failures any worse than this. www.weareecs.com
Imagine hearing 30 bigsoccer trolls sing the stuff they have on there, for 90 minutes, trying even to add a British accent. Sigh.
We are right on our way to being the MLS team everyone will love to hate. Success coupled with terrible support.
