QUOTE: I land (hopefully) only two hours before the match.
That either could be very good or very bad. Are you flying in and flying back out right away, or do you have a hotel? Even if it's a hotel nearby, that could be a problem time-wise with waiting to get your luggage, checking in, etc.
If I had any money, I'd consider flying up there for the Galaxy game--hour flight from SoCal, and hop on the airport shuttle to the BART station, which just so happens to be across the street from the Coliseum.
We have a hotel for one night in SF and we're flying into Oakland, so we'll be going straight to the game from the airport. I'm not checking any luggage. A change of underwear, a clean t-shirt, a Fire scarf and a toothbrush will be all my possessions.
@Inca: Sorry for the confusion re name. PSounder and I are not one and the same, but we're from the same town, run into each other from time to time and I couldn't think of anything better after staring at the registration page for a few minutes.
What happens to the Seattle Sounders currently playing in the USL then? The only light Wikipedia can shed on it is they might move to Poulsbo (a place I've never heard of.)
Will they keep the name? Will they have any connection to this upstart new outfit?
sorry for the confusion, Puget Sound gets good representation from all its inhabitants.
Gotta say, as a relatively new mls fan, God. Does Shaka Hislop really have to cover the league for The Guardian. I know I don't know too much myself, but dear Jesus, the man gets basic facts wrong.
As I said before - this is going to be a weird season for the Revs... losing 1-0 at home to the CRapids. Totally dominated the game and gave up a soft goal. I think the 3 games inside 6 days did the teenagers in...
However, I must say that our crappy result was made more palatable when picking up the paper sunday morning and seeing DCU getting their asses handed to them by perennial MLS doormats RSL.
Heh... After reading a DC United article in the daily Express (washington post freebie) after the Pachuca game stating things like "DC played well" and "Could easily have won" and "solid defense" I had a feeling this season could be really long and ugly. Then I get to this thread today and see that DC got smacked by Real Salt Lake.
Well, that was a fun 30 hour trip to the Bay Area for the 30 or so Chicago fans who made it. The night before, we got the news that the Fire's President and GM had left by "mutual consent" (hah), so that gave us some fodder for discussion this weekend.
Coincidentally, we spent most of Saturday at the game and after at the bar with Peter Wilt, who three years ago to the day was fired as the Fire's President and GM himself and replaced by Guppy. Peter was, as ever, a lot of fun and his insights into MLS and soccer were great to hear. Of course, I and others are fervently hoping Peter gets rehired now and restores Chicago's standing to what it was a few years ago.
We tailgated with the San Jose fans before the match. They were very welcoming, and we had no issues at all. We did have some problems with security inside, as despite extensive preparation and dialogue with the SJ front office, we were not allowed to bring in a flagpole we had been promised would be allowed.
The match itself was satisfying, as we won 1-0, but I have to say the Fire played poorly and San Jose deserved a point. The heat seemed to sap the team's energy completely in the second half. Somehow, the Earthquakes managed to hit the bar, post and miss an absolute sitter in injury time.
Apparently, DC United decided not to play any of its better starters at RSL, citing the need to rest after the cup game and because RSL's field is terrible. So basically it seemed like DC just conceded it. That raises questions about how these cup ties are scheduled and what the teams' priorities should be.
However, Soehn said that he wished the XI that were put out there had done better then get pasted 4-0.
Fortunately, I was out of town for the weekend, and didn't get to see the DCU game.
We shouldn't get too upset, though. We have a better record now than we did at this stage last year (1-2 v. 0-3, iirc). And we lost at RSL last year. Wasn't it two years ago that Freddy scored that wonder-goal to salvage a draw out there? We just never can play well out there.
Unfortunately, MLS squads have yet to either get in good enough shape to play well both midweek and at the weekend or have deep enough squads to rotate players for two games in a week. I wish that I could say that the salary cap would help solve this, but really, this early in the season, professional players should be able to play twice in a week, shouldn't they?
Goddammit I forgot to ask if you were going to be there, goldstone, I was too. Were you in the group of Fire fans walking around with Peter Wilt pregame under the stands, because I walked right past in the opposite direction?
I was expecting a loss at RSL, to be frank. We do not play well at altitude. That wonder Freddy goal was the 3-1 in RSL's 1st/beyond crap season. We've never done well in Colorado for instance, a lone 5-2 win in 97 aside, and given the effort put in on the Wednesday a loss was not surprising. 4-0 was beyond disappointing though. But this season is like last, in that we get our altitude trips out of the way early, and we'll be fine by the end.
