In case someone is interested, this is the result of a few weeks of lunchtimes spent on my Scooter on the streets of Brussels, taking pictures of the city's footbal grounds. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=33418692465
This collection of photos is a masterpiece. Really fascinating stuff. Some of the old grounds are amazing, and there's even one of the Peña Real Oviedo!
great great stuff Steph!
i've been to three of those grounds if i count correctly. or four if you count Union ground. i drunk in the Union bar and drinking is what Union fans are all about so the pub is like their ground.
besides didn't know you own a scooter.
e-mail is on the way soon now i'm back from balkan express tour.
cheers!
Even though I've been to matches at several of those grounds, I learned a lot. And I never knew that Koekelberg was on the site of a football ground. Is there any way we could blow it up and return the site to its original use?
Fascinating stuff, especially the text write ups I've always been really interested in trying to follow the vastly complex club histories in Belgium, I think you'd be hard pushed to find any other European country where the top fivision landscape had changed so much in the past 30 years.
One of the early shots covers Racing Jet whom I remember in the top flight in Belgium from when I first started to get interested in European football.
I have a MBK 125 cc Scooter. I don't regret a single moment buying it. Brussels is congested with cars. It seems that half the country is coming here every day to work, while 20% of the local population is on the dole...
By car, it's a waste of time and money for me to get to work. By public transport, it takes me 45 mins on average, 35 mins if I'm really lucky.
With my scooter, 15 mins. I only live 5 km from my work...
I have edited some of the comments I made and I have tried to correct as many mistakes I made in English. I also added a few facts on some grounds.
Brussels has a very rich footballing history (the Daring-Union rivalry before WW2 is still talked about these days). But today, it is in a sad state. In the top 4 divisions (the national leagues), there are only 4 teams : Anderlecht (D1), FC Brussels (D2), Union and White Star (both D3) for a total of 133 clubs...
During the 1972-1973 (a long time ago, I know), when I started to get into football (I was 7), there were 4 Brussels clubs in the top flight : Anderlecht, Racing White, Union and Crossing. My local club (before they merged to form RWDM), the legendary Daring, were in D2.
What a contrast with today.
