I'm with Andy, i use it when I've scrolled to the bottom of a thread and want to go back to the forum it's in. This means I don't need to scroll to the top of the thread to get out again.

But the Delete key takes you back just as fast, without scrolling.

I presume you mean the backspace key, but even that doesn't do the job. Backspace (in IE at any rate) is a keyboard equivalent to the "back" button, so if you've read through a multipage thread the keypress just takes you back to the next-to-last page in the thread, not to the forum page.
And, yes, I think the PM alert is more essential, but that doesn't make this improvement less welcome in itself.

Mobile phones don't have Delete keys, Backspace keys or Home keys, and depending on the browser the Back function isn't very fast. This is wonderful news.

And all of the alternate methods require using a second hand or taking your hand off the mouse, which whilst I'm not claiming some similarity of climinbg up a chimney aged 3 or working down a mine or somesuch, is still annoying.
I need my other hand for another greater purpose*

I still miss the "next" and "previous" buttons to scroll between threads without having to go via the forum homepage. I'd be really happy if we got those back.
