Has just won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I'll put my hand up and admit that I had never heard of him before this announcement.

Anyone not in that position? Linus? 1890??

I'd never heard of him either, but apparently he is the cousin of two sisters I was friends with in high school. I know that because one of them mentioned it on her facebook page today.

I've been reading about this in Geneva, any discusion about the nomination has been side-stepped in favour of a polemic caused by the Nobel foundation head basically accusing US writers of being insular non-entities which is why they hardly ever win the prize unlike Europeans. US intellectuals did not react too well to that...

I think some of your "controversial" Nobel judge's comments were near the money, but it's ironic that they've effectively pushed US writers centre-stage instead of drawing attention to the French winner.

That's been a big part of the coverage here as well; there has been an explicit theme in several of the reports that this is essentially to "even things out" for the Toni Morrison award (which is a bit weird, as that was 15 years ago, and no American had won since).

One of Italy's most respected literary critics has described Le Clezio as "mediocre".

I don't think they've done themselves any favours here.

Is this a prominent discussion of conversation in the mainstream press over there or are you just reading about it on literature blogs and what not?

It's front page news here.

Below the fold, but still front page. And it got two paragraphs and a photo in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Italian newspapers are still much more "literary" than their US counterparts.
