Well you see, we see them and we can't help but see the gulf between them and us; and we also see that they are successful and so on and we wish we could be like them. We feel bad because we're not like them. We love to look at them and we wish we were them. So, we like them and by contrast dislike ourselves, and that's when we're most vulnerable to ads for bum cream and wrinkle fillers and the rest of it. The editorials of every magazine do the rest of the persuading (in return for ad revenue).

I was reading a copy of Men's Health the other day for the first time, and it seems like that're now going for the same guilt & self-loathing angle.
