Here's a compilation I've put together: original versions of songs covered by The Fall. It's very good. Obvious classics, top-notch rarities, effed-up novelty tracks, and every one (it has to be said, really) vastly superior to the Fall version. Look out for tracks by The Monks / The Groundhogs / Tommy Blake which sound uncannily like Fall records already, plus a few that really, really don't.

Fall-haters dig in too. Some amazing stuff here.

Download here: FALL-ORIG.

or here: FALL-ORIG. (Rapidshare link)

Track listing:

1. THE KINKS - Victoria
(Fall version: single, 1987)

2. GENE VINCENT - Rollin' Danny
(Fall version - retitled "Rollin' Dany" - single, 1985)

3. THE MOVE - I Can Hear The Grass Grow
(Fall version on "Fall Heads Roll", 2005)

5. R. DEAN TAYLOR - There's A Ghost In My House

6. BOB McFADDEN & DOR - The Mummy
(Fall version - retitled "I'm A Mummy" - on "Levitate", 1997)

7. SIR GIBBS - People Grudgeful
(Fall version - retitled "Why Are People Grudgeful?" - 1993 single)

8. THE BIG BOPPER - White Lightning
(Fall version: single, 1990)

I prefer the Fall version of "I Can Hear the Grass Grow," but only the version from the Peel Session, which starts out as "Wrong Place, Right Time."

Many thanks!

Mr Pharmacist was 86 rather than 96.

The United States of America's Coming Down could have been stuck on given its, eh, similarity to Over! Over!

The Fall are a great covers band, aren't they? They can be a bit hit and miss, but you can't deny that yer man's got excellent taste.

Not sure why I put 96 instead of 86 - well, yes I do, it was at the end of a massive list and my brain was spinning.

Thought about including "Coming Down", as well as "White Line Fever" by Merle Haggard, "Last Chance To Turn Around" by Gene Pitney, "War" by Henry Cow, etc, but had to stop somewhere.

Pan Tau - help yourself.

Think my favourite of all of these at the moment is "Popcorn Double Feature" by The Searchers - it's bloody great.

It tells me (every time I try) that "All Megaupload slots to your country (Romania) are currently in use" (Nice of them to tell me where I live, but a bit irritating all the same). I suspect they've only got one and someone's been on all day downloading the collected speeches of Ceasusescu

Great work Taylor. I know of at least two people at work who will love this.

QUOTE:

"Why Are People Grudgeful?" was a retort by producer (and here, singer) Joe Gibbs to Lee 'Scratch' Perry, whose track "People Funny Boy" slagged off Gibbs, if I remember correctly. Perry had worked for Gibbs at some point.

Yeah, what makes it even more confusing is that the two songs are very similar, and The Fall version is sort of inbetween the two of them - closer to the Gibbs track, just about.

Just posted it on Touched Mix; if anybody wants to direct their pals to the comp without leading them to OTF.

Yesterday I also posted the comp of German hits from 1930-42 I made last year on our blog (it's open for posting comps by any OTFer; if anyone wants to post a mix, just ask for the password).

By the way, in view of ad hoc's problem with Megaupload, I wonder if he had any luck with Rapidshare. I can't download from either, and it seems nobody in SA has much better luck. A fantastic alternative is Sharebee, which automatically uploads a file to four filestorage services, usually Rapidshare, Megaupload, ZShare and another one (Badongo or Mediafire).

Rapidshare is downloading as I type - thanks Taylor. Megaupload has proven to be a complete bust though.

Mark E Smith is doing a public interview thing with his ghost writer at the Purcell Room on July 16th.

Does 7.45 start time allow enough time to see that and leg it to the Astoria in time for the resceduled Ladytron date?

Man, I love that Steve Bent record! Apparently he was a 1974 New Faces contestant, and I'm Going To Spain is remembered only because Kenny Everett included it in a radio show/compilation LP listing the world's worst records. But it's brilliant! The trombones, the castanets, that utterly bizarre doodlebug noise that comes in after he says "The factory floor presented me with some tapes of Elton John".

I can't get enough of records by songwriters who insist on writing prosaic lyrics. "I'm going to Spain!/Cousin Norman had a real fine time last year/I hear it doesn't rain/I hope that I can quickly learn the language." That's the chorus! Awesome.

Steve Bent has also appeared in Crossroads, The Bill, Minder, The Professionals, The Sweeney, Juliet Bravo and Lovejoy.

Ha, yeah I like he way he momentarily (and probably unintentionally) gives you the impression that he hates both his colleagues and his parents, before revealing that really, it's his mum's sandwiches he doesn't like. And the goodbyeeeeeeeeeeees.

ad hoc, if you try a MegaUpload download again, and still receive that message, go here to find a very easy way of getting around the problem in Firefox.
