Can I piggyback this thread? Cos I actually am on a podcast. Wow, check me out, how 21st century am I? Every week, the Independent newspaper (my employer) puts a music show online, and I was the guest album reviewer on the most recent one.

It’s not my most brilliant moment, to be honest. Usually you have one musician and one journalist bouncing ideas off each other, but on this occasion the musician couldn’t make it (which is a real pity, cos it was gonna be one of British Sea Power, who I love), so it was just me and the presenter one-on-one, and I maybe sound a little nervous and stilted.

I’m talking about the Damon Albarn/Jamie Hewlett musical Monkey, a reissue by a post-rock/free jazz act called Triosk, the new Roots Manuva album, and the new one by Max Tundra. None of which I found particularly thrilling subject-matter, with the possible exception of Max Tundra. Wow, I’m really selling this to you, aren’t I?

Anyway, if you want to hear my breathy faded-Welsh accent being mildly disparaging about those records, what you have to do is go to http://www.independentonlinesolutions.com/radioshows/ , go to Show 7, click ‘Launch As Pop-Up’, and then click the fast-forward button on the player until it gets to about -47.45 (the timer counts downwards, for some reason).

Man, I must have been too close to the mic. I sound like I’ve got emphysema.

Hopefully I’ll get to do another one at some point anyway

I'm boycotting your output since you wrote in your Metallica review that "Robert Trujillo on bass, who chooses to wear his socks pulled right up to meet the hem of his long shorts, like a Christian at a picnic" showing a frankly pitiful understanding of cholo chic.

I was only checking the piece out because The Guardian's 'review of reviews' appeared to be quoting your description of their songs as sounding like "some great machine, perhaps the ones that lay tarmac on the motorway" as a negative thing though I am glad to see that's not the case.

Sounds like overdone levelling to me (the process by which audio is smoothed out so it's all at the same volume, which if wrongly applied can make everyone hurrrrrrr sound as if they're haaaaaah having breathing difficulties, because their breathing becomes as loud as their speech, which it isn't naturally).

Harri - wow, when/where did that come out? I used to get review-of-the-week status in The Guardian's weekly 'The Editor' supplement quite often (which was always a bit of a thrill), but I thought they'd discontinued it.

I don't know what a Welsh accent sounds like, but you're more soft-spoken than I expected. I was listening for a bit more 'fuck you', as your pictures suggest there might be.

SR, on a Monday in g2 they do a page graph of reviews giving an "average score" and a line from each.
