Tonight I saw Oppenheimer Analysis play their first UK gig in 25 years. Jolly good it was, too. It only struck me as they started playing, though, just how they were basically the Pet Shop Boys before there were the Pet Shop Boys. If I had mentioned that in my 'London bleepiness' thread, maybe more people would have come. Oh well. As it is, I'm really glad I made the effort, as they were much, much better live than on record - a common phenomenon with synth bands.
The thing is, Andie Oppenheimer possibly has one of the worst voices ever comitted to record ...and I like flawed voices. I haven't included the worst examples in the file that is to follow, as I thought I'd spare you! However, I'm glad to say that a quarter of a century's practice seems to have improved his technique somewhat over the original versions.
Still, what follows is three of their best tracks - all of which they played tonight. They're of varying quality: the first track is taken directly from their 1982 limited edition cassette-only album,
'New Mexico', while the next two tracks are later re-mastered versions. Thus, I'm afraid that the volume varies somewhat too.
Whatever - I thought that, given their preemptive PSB-ness, some here might find them a bit of a curio. They're playing Brighton Electrofest next April, if anyone is interested.
(Oh - and Andie Oppenheimer really
is related to Robert Oppenheimer! He's a great-nephew or something.)
Here's the tracks:
