Ha, look at me as the spotlighted list on today's Poll The People, for the Motown 50th anniversary compilation. And how more girlified and beehive-wearing could my selection be?

I tried to vote in that, but the interface fucked up as soon as I tried, so I've had to give up.

I don't know that Tammi Terrell one, Nish. I'll have to track it down.

Wow, a Motown top 5? I have a hard enough time narrowing my favourite individual Motown artists down to a 5, never mind the whole label. Fuck it, here goes...

1. Martha Reeves And The Vandellas - "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave"
2. Smokey Robinson And The Miracles - "(Come Round Here) I'm The One You Need"
3. The Supremes - "Up The Ladder To The Roof"
4. The Four Tops: "It's The Same Old Song"
5. The Isley Brothers - "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)"

I think Nishlord's Number One may be right on the money, despite the strength of the competition. It was on the 1968 docco the other night, and it struck me again what a flawless piece of pop it is.

This list is almost impossible to compile, isn't it?

But, in the spirit of getting this sort of thing wrong:

1. The Temptations - "I Can't Get Next To You"
2. Stevie Wonder - "Uptight"
3. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - "Tears Of A Clown"
4. The Jackson 5 - "ABC"
5. The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

Bit of a predictable list, I guess, but I was trying to do it taking over-familiarity into account.

My parenthetical top five

Just my imagination (Running away with Me)

Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)

Ball of Confusion (that's what the world is today)

What Does It Take (To Win Your Love?)

I can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)

Get a load of that funky punctuation

You really can't get it wrong, though, unless you're chucking in Boyz II Men and all that later cack.

SR: I've always known it as a Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell tune. Isn't it so fucking Motown?
